His Book Safe is Safe

RousseauLooking for something to read? Let's see . . . Redwall, The Jungle Book, The Lord of the Rings, Eragon, Rousseau . . .

Rousseau?? While I'm sure every ten-year old boy has a dog-eared copy of this classic on his shelf, if you're looking for some cozy bedtime reading on general will, natural rights, civic humanism or social contracts, you may be disappointed because this edition is different.

I give you: the Book Safe. Perfect for hiding secret documents, microchips, cyanide capsules, safe-deposit box keys and industry secrets:
Book SafeMade with love and imagination by one of my resident cub scouts (not allowed to say which one, that would be giving too much away) and it's where he's hiding all his Bond gadgets while they're on loan from M. Or at least his Leatherman while he's as school.

And the greatest security feature? I'm pretty sure no one's going to be picking up that book any time soon. I think his secrets are safe.

  1. I need one of those. We have so many books at our house I am sure we wouldn't even be able to find our safe ourselves. My boys would love a project like this if only I could handle defacing a book. I am not sure I could endure that.

    Genius.

However, I have a hard time cutting up a book. I get mad when SF colors on one with crayon...

perhaps i'll show him this... i bet he would LOVE to make something like this!

And to think some people pay good money to "buy" one of these book safes premade from some fancy smancy catalog!

    Very clever boy, yours... :)

My Girlie is going to want to copy that idea. Very clever.

  8. Got yourself a little cub-scout Stephen King reader then? Isn't that straight out of SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION? Other than the book of choice to hide his secrets.

What a great little project and a cool hiding place. I think some of the secret keepers around here could use a bit of book carving fun this week while we are on break from school!

  9. I hate the idea of one of *my* books meeting this fate -- but the local thrift store should have a number of good candidates at very low costs.

I can see the earnest looks on their faces now...

  11. My son is like a squirel. He stashes his "secret" stuff all over the house. As soon as he gets a bookshelf in his room we will have to make one of those.

I remember taping paper to the back of a picture frame to make a hidden pocket. I thought I had to take extra measures to make sure my little brother didn't steal my horde of two dollars.

  12. Oh, my social contract aches. Michelle, why do you show this to a former American Heritage TA? ;)

It's scary to imagine how you can pick up one of the old books you love only to discover that it has been made into a safe. Thank goodness my kids aren't much into crafts
    :-D

  14. Oh that's so funny. Mine has recently decided he needed a container to put his "treasures" in. So we found a coffee container. You just have to love boys.

  15. Cool idea. I would have to work hard to find a book worthy of it -- or unworthy of reading. Maybe an old textbook?

  16. I would need to make my book safe out of, Chemistry for Dummies, so it would blend with all the others...

What a wonderfully creative idea! It would have to be a pretty beat up book though ... Book Karma is a witch at times!

  18. I love the idea but in our house it would be obvious as it would be the only book still ON the bookshelf.

  19. Nope, not thinking that it's a safe place. A book like that would look so out of place, that I would be pulling it out just to see what it was all about.

My guys were into old cigar boxes for their treasures.

oh, man. Now everyone on the whole internet KNOWS it's a safe, not a real book. Mo-om! No fair!
