Fly Fishing at Tangle Lakes

Fly Fishing at Tangle LakesSeeing my boys fly fishing was one of my favorite parts about camping last week. Though I don't know how to do it I can appreciate the poetry of the movements and I sat there on the banks of the river watching him casting his line and catching grayling for quite some time. The only sound was the ripple of the water as it dragged against his hip waders.

From the opening paragraph of Norman Maclean's A River Runs through It:

In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing. We lived at the junction of great trout rivers in western Montana, and our father was a Presbyterian minister and a fly fisherman who tied his own flies and taught others. He told us about Christ's disciples being fishermen, and we were left to assume, as my brother and I did, that all first-class fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fishermen and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman.

A River Runs Through It. . .one of my favorite movies. That's what your photo reminded me of. I once had a client for whom fly fishing was almost a religious experience . . . very interesting perspective he had.

Great photo.

That looks like a lot of fun. My kids love fishing at my parent's house - as a matter of fact, that sounds like a great idea - maybe we'll do that today.

I posted peaceful pictures pictures from my camping weekend, too. It's amazing how nice it is to 'get away' and just listen to nature. Glad your family had fun!

Michelle, we're kindred spirits. We just got back from a camping trip to Colorado and saw quite a few fly fishermen. I've never tried it, but it looks hard and definitely requires more coordination than I possess. lol

Kudos to your son! He looks like a pro.

Wow, what a beautiful photograph of your son. As the daughter of an outdoorsman who has no outdoor skills herself, I too can appreciate it.

Another reason for mama to be proud!

What a beautiful picture!

My father aspires to be a fly-fisherman. It's frightening. But don't tell him I said so. =)

Thats a great picture of your son fishing! I love to go fishing with the family. Izzak has been going with his dad since he could barely walk and helps his sibling to tie lines and cast now.

That brings back a lot of memories. I love Tangle Lakes. Hopefully next year will be the year we get back up there.

I loved the book A River Runs Through It. I like Hemmingway's Nick Adam stories for the same reasons.

I like fishing, but I am totally not coordinated enough to fly fish. I would probably shoot my eye out and there aren't even Red Rider BB guns involved in fishing! (Still, it would happen. I just know it.)

We were up at Tangle Lakes in June. My kids caught their first little fish there. They caught some little trout. They were so proud of themselves. I love watching fly fishing too. Last weekend we spent some time near Sterling fly fishing for reds in the Kenai River. So relaxing!
