Sticky Buns

Sticky BunsI've heard people call this Monkey Bread and it may be a similar recipe to what I've got here but I'm guessing that this is a faster, easier, better way to make it. If you don't want to use your own bread it also works with Rhoades Rolls too (saves even more time).

It's been a staple at our breakfast table for a dozen years now which explains the less-than-optimal picture. What kind of lighting can you expect at 7 am? In winter? In Alaska? With five hungry mouths about to perish with hunger so you don't have time to get a proper picture?

1 cup milk
2 eggs
1/3 cup butter
1/3 cup sugar
4 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon yeast
1 package cook-and-serve vanilla pudding
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup melted butter

Mix the first seven (through yeast) ingredients in the bread machine on the "dough" cycle. Meanwhile mix the pudding, sugar and nuts together. When the dough is done, break off pieces of the dough and roll them into balls, layering them in a greased tube pan sprinkled with a bit of the dry mix. Sprinkle the mix over the balls of dough as you go so that there is pudding/sugar mix all through the balls of dough and sprinkle any remaining mix over the top. Pour the melted butter over the dough and cover with plastic wrap. Put it directly into the refrigerator and let it sit overnight until you're ready to bake it.

In the morning, turn on the oven to 350 degrees and remove the plastic wrap from the pan. Put it directly into the preheating oven and let it bake for about 40 minutes or until golden brown on the top.

When it comes out, immediately invert it onto a platter and serve--the sooner the better.

MUST. HAVE. SOME. NOW. Omg, why do you do this to me!?

If I can use the dough cycle on my breadmaker, I can probably handle this recipe!

(I actually prefer the "less than perfect" photos--they seem a little warmer to me than the lightbox!)

Thank you for the recipe! I knew I was hanging on to that package of pudding mix for some reason.

*ignorant question* Does the dough cycle in the bread machine just knead the dough? I don't have a bread machine but I do have a dough hook for my stand mixer...

I love how you have a caramel tag for your posts, you're my kind of cook!

We do call this Monkey Bread in our house. Would you like to hear another fast (lazy?) shortcut? Use two or three cans of refridgerated biscuits. Cut the biscuits into quarters and coat them with the sugary mix. Easy!!

(I have never added vanilla pudding mix to mine - sounds heavenly!)

ohmygod, just looking at it puts on 10 pounds and makes me guilty about not exercising today. But so so so good!

Yum! Wish I had a mouthful of it now!

Ok, this is totally unfair.

I'm doing WW and although I would love to taste this delicious monkey bread, I'm sure it is a gallion and one points for a bite and who takes just one bite!

(pout, pout!) I'll drool in private over that yummy picture.

Oh, my goodness! This looks delicious! I'll have to make this the next time I have family visiting for the weekend. There's no way that my husband, son and I could (or should) eat that whole thing!

I can smell the bread from here. Yummmmm. I gained 5 pounds just thinking about it but I don't care.

Yes, the dough cycle kneads the dough but it also warms it to help it rise. You don't need the bread machine, just prepare the dough as you would in your mixer and that will do just fine.

Which is good because my bread machine is about to kick the bucket, I wear them out I use them so much.

I make Monkey bread all the time and in many different ways. The pudding mix is a new one on me though. I love that this can be fixed the night before. I'm going to have to use this when we have guests for Thanksgiving.

Looks heavenly - I'm surprised there wasn't an empty plate and just grubby hands in the picture.

Mmm. I might have to try this next weekend. Weekends are the only times I get to bake something special for breakfast. That is, outside of summer.

Hi. Hope you don't mind, but I clicked on your blog through another and found a picture of what I made this morning for breakfast. It was almost the same thing. Mine has a few less steps. But looks exactly the same. Such a small world!

We'll have to try this recipe. We've made it a few times with less than stellar results. Thanks!

Oh my goodness...I am drooling on the keyboard. Boy that looks better than the oatmeal I ate this AM :)

We called it monkey bread growing up. And we also used that pre-made dough - the kind in those scary pop-open tubes. I think your homemade version deserves the classier name, though. Yum. Maybe I'll try this on Christmas morning instead of the Martha Stewart-version disaster I made last year.

Why are you apologizing? You're presenting us with caramel-y, pecan-filled bread! We should be thanking you. :)
