This idea is not only fun for kids but healthy too (plus it gets me ready for some gardening). It'll make it easy to sneak some good stuff into their diet when they've grown it themselves.I don't suppose I need to explain this but I'll give it a go anyway. Draw a face on an egg then crack off the top. Scramble the goodie inside for breakfast, whatever, it's the shell you want and once you've emptied it either drop a spoonful of potting soil in or cut a square piece of sponge, wet it and stick it in.
Sprinkle some seeds in there and set them in a sunny windowsill to watch them grow. Try alfalfa seeds or broccoli seeds for some extra nutritional punch (I just love the soft broccoli flavor of these guys and their packed with vitamins). Seeds should sprout in a few days, by the end of about a week you should have enough for a sweet little salad.

Love the idea. Nothing wasted, plus you are teaching the kids about gardening, healthy eating, and also indirectly about green living.

Those egg planters are great! I have an "egg guy" pretty close to me where I buy all of my eggs. I should show them these - they're really cool. How much fun would the kids have making these and watching them grow? We're eating the eggs anyway and composting the shells. This way they shells are the planter. I suppose if it were some other plant, you could even just put the shell in the ground when you're done - crack it a little and plant it.

I've made egg shell seedlings before but I've never thought of making funny faces on them. Fun idea.

egg shell also a good source of calcium, needed by the plant to grow, so the egg shell is not just a place, but also as source of nutrient for the plant to grow..

This is a great idea. I grew oregano on the deck (also basil, chives, and tomatoes) and the Queen chowed down every day - she was 18 months old.

We bought a ceramic version of these for our two grandkids (sold at Fred Meyer) cause we thought they were such a clever idea. Will suggest they draw faces on them as you have.
