You can imagine the humor this cake spawned in my house growing up. With a name like "Dump Cake" it was bound to be the basis of plenty of stupid jokes but despite the name it's a good recipe.
It's simple enough to qualify as White Trash Food but that doesn't stop me from making it when I'm racing to find something quick for dessert. Recipes that only have five ingredients and are ready in under a half an hour are just gold. I don't care if they come from a can.
You know . . . I bet this is the dessert Martha makes for herself when no one's looking.
1 15-ounce can crushed pineapple
1 20-ounce can of cherry pie filling
1 box yellow cake mix
1/2 cup melted butter
whipped cream for topping
Now be careful--these directions are pretty tricky so make sure you follow it carefully:
Pour the can of pineapple into a lightly greased 9x13 rectangular pan. Spoon the pie filling over the top. Pour the cake mix over that, followed by the melted butter evenly poured over the whole thing. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Top with whipped cream.
Not too classy, not too hard but highly satisfying.

Thanks for the recipe, that is definitely a cake even I can't mess up.
This is a family treasure, made now for the third generation :)
Yum- Yum!!
Ok, despite the white trash connection, it sounds too easy to pass up and really tasty! I'm going for it.
Oh my goodness, I hadn't thought of dump cake in years. I remember my best friend's Grandma made it everytime she came out to the ranch for a visit. We kids all looked forward to Leimone's grandma coming and baking huge pans of dump cake.
Somehow, I don't think this particular dessert is going to aid me in maintaining my goal weight...
Looks like a tasty dessert to me!
Thanks for commenting on my blog, Michelle!!
Ahh it makes the trailer-trash girl in me sing!
Goodness, that sounds quite tasty =] I must try that out sometime. Pineapple + cherries = heaven.I love your blog so much! The posts are rather interesting and the layout very nice.
TBH, I found your blog while searching for parenting sites, and was wondering if one of your four children was a teenager? If so...you might be interested in my blog, teensonparenting.blogspot.com
My father in law makes this and we all LOVE it. :)
It's so easy!!!
Mmmm, white trash food at its best. I do this same thing but I pour it over canned peaches with cinnamon. Yummers.
I haven't had one of these cakes in a long time, but maybe this week I can whip one up!
The entire recipe ought to cost less than $5, if you're able to get your ingredients at Aldi (or even the dollar store!)
This is one of the first things my mom taught me to take to a potluck--easy, but super yummy. I prefer using strawberry pie filling rather than cherry (although strawberry is more expensive), but it's all about taste preferances.
That sounds yummy!
I've made dump cake with apple pie filling. Not too shabby. My grandma used to do it with pumpkin pie filling and spice cake mix. My mom has done chocolate cake with cherry pie filling. The possible combos are endless.
And yes, it is right up there with the Diet Coke + Cake Mix + 350 degrees for 30 minutes in classiness. You wouldn't serve it to the Queen, but it's good for a laugh/cooking experiment.
Mom mom makes this, usually just with cherry pie filling, but it's sooo yummy! I'll have to try it with pineapple, too!
I have a huge blueberry tree in my backyard, and I make this same recipe with fresh blueberries. Yummy! 'Cept I leave off the whipped topping and add ice cream :)
We had guests one time and I thought I would be clever and make dump cake. I had made it many times in a dutch oven over a camp fire, but never in my real oven, so needless to say I messed up. How can that be possible, you might be wondering, but I did it! Anyway, my guests (the mom and kids anyway) thought having a bowl full of half-cooked cake, fruit and cake batter was actually OK. At least that is what they said. The kids were telling the truth for sure. It helps to serve it with ice cream.

One question -- do I need to mix the cake batter before I pour it on top of the fillings? Sorry to be so ignorant. I usually just make rhubarb upside down cake.
It's a great recipe to let the kids help with also!
My mom ended up one of the "feature cooks" in our local paper's recipe section once when she submitted this recipe to their annual cookbook. (Yeah, it's THAT good, and THAT easy!)
My cousin and his wife are developmentally disabled and I have decided to make them a cookbook of super easy, tasty things they can make. This is the perfect kind of recipe. Not that you have to be developmentally disabled to enjoy this. OK I'll stop now, I think I am digging myself into a hole.
Oh I hope I got here in time to clarify--
DON'T MIX UP THE MIX! Just pour the dry mix on top. See? I promised it was easy. You don't even have to make up the batter, just use the dry stuff right out of the bag.
One of my mom's staple recipes. I've eaten about a zillion pieces and they were all good.
My mother-in-law has passed on a similar recipe to me for Rhubarb Upside Down cake. Not quite as simple, in that you have to chop some rhubarb and put it in the bottom of the cake pan, but it's delicious. The perfect thing to make when you see rhubarb in the store in early spring, and you want to bake with it, but don't want to go to all the work for strawberry-rhubarb pie. Three cheers for easy recipes!
Yummy! I make this and the name makes the kids snicker and giggle.
Last week I made it w/ 2 cans of cherry and 1 can of apple pie filling. Turned out great!
YUMMMMMMMM good idea!
Okay. I"ve got it now. It's in my files.
Wow, that's a flashback. We used to eat that a lot when I was a child...but I haven't heard of it in years. Thanks for resurrecting it :)
Oh, I love me some Dump Cake! Although due to some long-forgotten private joke I usually call it Junk Cake.
I'm not a fan of cherry pie filling, so I love to substitute strawberry, blueberry or especially Peach!
I think I have a craving now!
Oh wow that sounds amazing!
Now this is my kind of recipe - I made it the night I read it on your blog! Except with blueberry pie filling. It was a hit! (http://littlehatz.blogspot.com/2008/04/two-for-tuesday_15.html See #2) Yummy - thank you!
Oh, I love this one - I haven't made it in a while, maybe tomorrow night!!
Never heard of dump cake, but, boy, it's a great idea. Perfect for kids to make and perfect when you need a dessert asap. Fun recipe, Michelle.
Check out the Pioneer Woman cooks. She posted this same recipe a few days after you posted it. I think it's just a coincidence, but FYI.
LOL. I was just going to say that PW posted the same recipe!
This is my favorite cake. I've made it with Raspberry Pie filling instead of Cherry, and it was delicious.
This is one of my favorites.I make this a lot to take to family parties everyone always loves it .
I like the idea of something you could toss together and then just bake while you're doing dinner dishes. By the time people wanted dessert, there it is!
I've heard of dump cake but was too scared to find out what exactly was in it.
Thanks for the recipe!
i think dump cake is only a name, but the taste is so yummy

I finally got around to trying out this recipe last night and man on man is it good! It's so easy too! My husband wants me to try the recipe blueberries and apply pie filling next time.
