I flew into Anchorage at midnight on Sunday and took this picture as we came over Fire Island on the final approach. The night was a little darker than it should be with all those clouds--you can't even see the mountains because of them--but it gives you an idea of how bright it can be at midnight.
The flight was uncommonly comfortable and relaxing and as a bonus I watched a DVD that I'd recommend you see. Flawless, starring Demi Moore and Michael Caine, is a 60s-tribute heist movie with class and suspense. It's not a typical action movie like The Italian Job but the lighting, set design and acting all create a terrific sense of "what's going to happen next?"
I don't know how it got a PG-13 rating unless it's because Demi smokes in nearly every scene because it's clean enough to be rated G. I'd give it an "A"--but considering how I love Michael Caine that's no surprise.

It was so nice to meet you, even if only briefly, at BlogHer!
What a wonderful photo. I've often wondered just how bright it stays there through the night. Thanks for sharing!
I have some pics like that from where we flew in when we moved there. I'll have to dig em out and scan em. Love the daylight at midnight!
Lovely picture. I've always wanted to have a picnic at midnight ever since reading about Alaska as a child. Thanks for the visual!
Nice...with the cowling in the foreground. On final approach. It's a great feeling to be coming back home!
Very cool picture! I've been meaning to e-mail you to see if you could post a picture of your house at midnight. I'd still love to see it. (Hint, hint.)
Excellent photo! Makes me want to come and visit Alaska. :)
Thanks for the movie recommendation...I'm always on the lookout for good, clean movies.
Beautiful photo one day I hope to visit Alaska until then I will just have to look at the pictures you put up of it.
Wow, how weird! Well, not for you I guess but us loosers down here in the lower 48 :)
I'll have to put that movie on my netflix list - I'll see it in about a year - that's how long my queue is !
The movie says PG 13 for brief strong language. I didn't look at that until after the movie, when I was trying to figure out why the PG 13 rating.
My teenager - who is an action movie junkie - thought it was boring. But I agree with you that it was intellectually very intriguing. I enjoyed it and loved that it was clean.
Welcome home! I've seen the movie at my local Redbox several times but never knew if it was good enough to rent. Oh how I wish I had rented it instead of the movie I rented yesterday. On your recommendation I'm getting it next time I go out!
Oh and since you were kind enough to recommend a good movie let me steer you away from a really awful one. Do not, under and circumstances, rent Bella. I found it to be a horrible movie on so many levels! I can't believe I watched it all the way through. That's two hours of my life I'll never get back.
Wow, its beautiful. Alaska is on our list of potential vacation destinations for the upcoming year. This makes me excited.
Adria--gosh I must have missed that because I don't remember ever one swear word in the whole thing. Of course I was watching it on the plane and maybe the sound of the engines cut it out.
ANd good to know to avoid Bella--it's so irritating to waste your time on a bad movie isn't it?
Hope you had a great trip!
Fire Island is such an appropriate name. Looks beautiful.
I don't remember ever hearing about flawless, but if Michael Caine is in it, then it goes on my list.
Glad you are back. It must have been a fun time. Can't wait to have more information.
WOW - that is so crazy how bright it is! Great shot.
It was so wonderful getting to meet you - and Lindsay!!! - at BlogHer. Lindsay is so much fun. (Could I say "so" more in this comment???)
BTW you are on my site today. :) Hope it is okay I posted the shot.
PS - this is Janice talking, but I am logged in as Susan
