Everyone has their favorite recipes, right? The ones that get pulled out over and over again, modified and tweaked but loved over the years?
This is one of those--I can't even remember where I got it originally but I've been cooking these guys for a dozen years and always with happy results.
I've been holding it back because it's a gem--you only have so many of these you know?
1 3-pound beef brisket
½ cup water
3 tablespoon vinegar
2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon ground cumin
16-ounces barbecue sauce
10 split rolls or 20 slices of crusty bread
Combine all the ingredients in a slow cooker and set on a sweet low-and-slow simmer until the meat just falls apart. It'll take about six or eight hours so be patient because the smell of it cooking will drive you wild with anticipation.
Once the meat is falling apart, take it from the juice--which you might want to save, it's great for stock and all sorts of things, I freeze it in ice cube trays for convenience--and shred it. Add a bit of the juice back to it to soften things up and give it flavor then add the barbecue sauce of your choice. Homemade or store bought for convenience, you decide but serve the meat on split rolls or crusty French bread--they're also good with rings of red onion, a bit of lettuce for crunch, or a thick slice of tomato--even pickles are tasty.
I've even used this formula to cook and shred chicken and pork--it's really an all-purpose recipe that turns out great every time.

Thank you for sharing! I recently did a simple pork roast (from the Costco triple pack for $1.99/pound :) in the slow cooker with a bottle of barbecue sauce and we made sandwiches. Next time, I will definitely try your formula because, while ours were quite tasty, this sounds downright delicious!
My husband saw this picture and started salivating! He's promised to make it :)
just for clarification: do you add the BBQ sauce to the slow cooker, too?
looks delicious!
Mmmm...
Love that you resisted the temptation to post about how to use your Thanksgiving left-overs. Hooray for originality and for a tasty dish.
Beef, it is what for dinner. :)

Mmmmm... sounds yummy! I'd also like clarification on the BBQ sauce. If you add it at the end, do you also put it in the slow cooker?
I'll add the bbq sauce at the end and then stick the meat back in the cooker just to keep it warm until serving time.
oh my! This looks really yummy! I'm goint to borrow your recipe :-)
oh my...
I'm off to the store right now and I'm not even just saying that. I LOVE this kind of sandwich and now I know what we're having for dinner. I don't care if we don't eat until 8! (:
I was just looking for a brisket slow cooker recipe yesterday--wish you had posted this last Sunday, though the one I found was pretty good (hubby wanted to sip the juice with a straw!). Anyway, I will definitely keep this for future use.
I can't wait to try this. It looks so good!
I use a similar recipe with a pork shoulder. Thanks for reminding me-I needed a new/old recipe this week!
Thank you for posting! This sounds sooo delicious! I'll be making it this week!
Oh yum that looks perfect on this snowy day! Could you pass me one please? LOL
This sounds absolutely delicious! I'm going to try it soon. I love making italian beef too.
I am such a sucker for slow cooked, melt in your mouth meats. The best thing about a country fair is the bbq meats, in my opinion anyway.
Looks delicious.
Oh, yum!
I am going to have to try this recipe- yum!
As Mindyleigh said, I also have used pork roast, but this sound delish. Will give this a try over the holidays. Thanks.
this sounds so yummy and I am definitely trying it out. Thanks so much for sharing.
p.s. totally bummed I missed the joes giveaway. they are perfect for my curvy bum (a.k.a fat butt) :)
I tried it and it's GREAT!! Made half like this and put the rest of the meat and juice back in the cooker with some potatoes and carrots, for a second meal of stew...very tasty!
Yum! That looks good!
This is in my Crock-Pot right now! I'm really looking forward to dinner!
