Story Dice

Story DiceHave you seen this idea before? It's so cute I thought it was a must-share.

They're called Story Dice and the idea is that you roll them out and use the objects to tell a story.

Now the ones I did here are organized a bit--there are a few dice that have animals only on them, one with methods of transportation, one with household objects, one with clothing, one with landscape features, that kind of thing. I figured it would be helpful toward plot that way.

One twist I saw was where, instead of painting little pictures on the dice, the person used stickers instead. Very clever. You could probably even cut pictures from magazines and do the same thing. Kids would have a great time making their own.

Once you sit down to play with them you can roll the dice all at once and start from there or take turns picking a die and rolling it to see what happens next--if you've got a storyteller in the family it makes for a fun activity.

Those are beautiful--what a great family activity and a terrific literacy tool. I think you should sell kits of them on etsy or your site.

This is such a great idea! We've done this, but with everyone naming off something they want in the story - this sounds a bit easier - thanks for the idea!

I think you should sell kits in your etsy store, too. Because I think I'd buy one.
They are awesome.

I was going to say the same thing as Nancy. Any chance you'd put these in your Etsy store? The paintings are WAY better than anything I could even dream of accomplishing!

Where did you find those little cubes to create the dice, not that I could ever paint something so beautiful on each side. :-D

So cute! I saw these over the "The Toby Show" this spring. I, too, think you should put your version on Etsy. I loved the version "Mamaroots" did with rubber stamps (on Etsy) but couldn't really imagine my children coming up with many stories about mushrooms and snails. Although, stranger things have surprised me!

This is a marvelous idea. If you were selling a set, I would buy them. Because I am not even a little bit artistic, I don't think I could manage to make a set myself.

I started reading this and thought, "I could make those with stickers!" You beat me to the punch every time! Although with stickers, you would really want to use some Mod Podge to finish the blocks off, so they don't unpeel (either through use or with help).

Well thanks for the compliments--I don't have the time right now to put some on Etsy but I've seen these guys around enough that I bet you could do a search there and find some.

Or the sticker idea is pretty easy too.

The cubes can be found at most craft stores, these ones were a little small, the size of regular dice, but you can get them bigger too.

Michelle,

I can see these as a great useful tool for kids that hate writing in school. This is a way to keep it fun and creative and still get the goals accomplished. I am going to make my own and perhaps some just for the holidays as well.

I love this idea. I wanted to share it, but I have no clue how to give proper credit and such, so I have linked directly to your post on my blog.

Those are adorable! What a great idea. I'd be grumpy that mine wouldn't turn out as cute as yours, though. :)

Those are amazing! I'm jealous because I can't paint. But I also think creating them (or playing with them) would be a perfect activity for the kids' book club at Loussac Library. Thanks!

Great idea- thanks for sharing! I teach gifted kids, so this is right up my alley. I think I'll also pass it on to other teachers needing ideas for their reluctant and/or higher level learners.

So you made these?! I have a card version--different pictures on each card. My 3yo loooooves it. But making the dice would be very cool, too.

(Here's the cards I have. Aren't they beautiful?!

I love this! I would love to have a set. Did you buy them somewhere? or are you really clever and talented enough to paint them with your own ideas. I would definitely buy one if you sold them on etsy!

I use "story cards" like these in my classroom. Great fun!

My kids would love this. My lack of painting talent pushes me toward the sticker idea, though.

Very cool!
We have story blocks for Christmas time, but they are not as versatile as your dice.
Love this idea of doing them on dice!
Will have to post when I make some (or are you selling these? I love yours and would love to buy some from you if you decide to make and sell some):)

COOL!! Love this, I think I shall make some. I'll probably print off little pictures and glue them on, then coat the whole dice in glue like decoupage. It would be easier than painting - and I like easy. ;)

These would be great for creative writing assignments for school, too. =)

I often have small wood scraps around and wonder what to do with them. This is an excellent idea. The stickers or magazine trick helps so a kid can make them, too.
