Letters from My Son

Letter from My SonOne of my ten year-old sons--can't say which ten year-old son for fear of embarrassing him and blowing his cover--loves to write. Journal entries, stories, anything with words he loves and he's developed an endearing habit of leaving me notes.

He'll write me a letter then fold it up in some creative origami way and leave it for me to find: under my pillow, by my bedside, tucked in a book, all over the house. Sometimes with a piece of precious candy from his treasured Halloween/Easter/Valentine's Day stash but he leaves it somewhere then sits back and waits for me to make the discovery.

I can't tell you everything that's in them, that would be cheating, but the one I found this week was one of my favorites. I'll post a quick excerpt (and remember whose spelling I'm using):

You might think at times that your not a very good mom. But I don't think even a person with an all-seeying eye could find a better mom than you (even if we don't have video-games).

Anyone out there with an all-seeying eye? Just curious. I thought that was my mother. And I'm glad to hear that my final grade isn't riding on the video games issue.

I'm keeping this to pull out on days when he's not as happy with me or when I'm not as happy with him--these things get you through the less pleasant parts of parenting and makes me remember why I wanted to be a mom.

Awwww. That's so sweet!

Do you keep it in a special treasure box next to your bed?

Very cute!

Wow! That's so sweet of him. I'm sure you cherish all his notes. My eldest M, is that way too. I have a box filled with all his little notes and drawings.

Oh my gosh, that is the most precious thing. Lucky you! I can only hope that someday my little man will write something like that to me.

"...(even if we don't have video-games)..."

That's a hint. Haha.

You have such a sweet young man and to have your son give you this kind of honour must be the best feeling in the world!

A sweet mom reward.

I'm sure you're keeping all these letters to give back to him one day. What a great thing to do, and a great thing to treasure. And things like this sure do help through the harder times of parenting.

That is amazing. I hope I have a treasure like that one day. We all need that reassurance of being a good mom. Some days it really doesn't seem like it. Thank you for sharing that little bit of sweetness. Does he tell you any good jokes? I need some new ones--the corny 5-6 year old variety--to introduce to our lineup.

I have to say, that letter is better than your rockin girl blogger award (though you do deserve that one too!)

How sweet!

I always thought my mom had an "all-seeing eye," or at the very least eyes in the back of her head. My cousin and I actually looked for the eyes in the back of her head once. She told us we couldn't find them because they were closed. Man, she was good...

"..even if we don't have video games" This must be true love. It's like a hug on paper.

Treasures! The writer and the notes.

I'm glad to hear the video game thing is not a deal breaker. Maybe there's hope for me after all. Sometimes I wonder if I'm the last mom on earth that won't buy her kids a *%$! Nintendo already.

There's more where that came from for sure...
Wait till he gets to be 20 and he says "thanks mom for all that you've done for me and being there when I needed you most" (actually uttered by my own child)
aw man.. it melts your heart and you can treasure it forever.

So touching and sweet! What a wonderful lil' guy you've got at ten! He's going to make a fine hubby someday!

You should start a little book of his letters so that if he becomes belligerent in his teen years (people keep telling me boys do that) you will have something to look back on that will comfort you. I can't imagine someone who says such sweet things becoming belligerent though.

That is the sweetest thing ever! What a precious memory to keep tucked away for when he is older (or getting on your last nerve). I love it!

WOW! What a sweetheart :-)

both my daughter did/do that - ever so heart warming. I don't know about your mum but I AM the mum with the all seeing eyes [although they don't know that it's really my ears]
Cheers

That is so cute. Kids are just wonderful!

Your writing about the 'all seeing eyes' reminded me of what my son did around ten or so. He came up behind me and put his hand across the back of my head. He wasn't the touchy-feely kind of kid so it surprised me. I turned around and asked him what he was doing. He said "just covering your eyes on the back of your head because I don't want you to see this."

Remember those kinds of stories about your kids because they will ask for them when they grow up and have their own kids. My son is now 23 with no kids of his own yet but he still likes hearing how he was like as a kid.

Now that letter is definitely a keeper. As far as Girlie Girl is concerned, I have eyes on the back of my head - just like my Mom did. LOL!

Aw, you're so lucky. But of course, luck doesn't have anything to do with it -- you're a good mom! Video games or not! ;)

That is such a sweet little memento! I am very impressed by his creative wording! Future writer, maybe? What a surprise, he being YOUR son and all. ;)
