Things I'm Doing with All That Free Time

Napoleon DynamiteLillian started school on Tuesday so that means all of my children--all--are in school. She only goes for a half-day but oh what a glorious thing those three hours are.

But sometimes I'll meet people who'll express wonder at how I'll cope. "What will you do all day now that your kids are in school?" They say, ready with a hanky should I burst into tears. Well I'm here to report that I'm coping pretty well and this list of things I'm doing with the free time should prove it. If you could only see the smile on my face.

1. Napping? Quite possibly. I reserve that right should I feel a snore coming on. Is there anything more luxurious than the ability to lie down and take a nap when that post-lunch lethargy hits and you can't keep the eyelids open any longer? Oh you know I'm loving it. Sorry if you're reading this while at the office. Maybe you could lock the door and pull out the air mattress hidden beneath your desk and get some sleeping time in too.

2. Knitting. When the fall hits and the air gets cooler I start thinking about being more productive and domestic--i.e. knitting. Lillian's getting a new sweater and maybe now I'll have time to finish it. Finally! I'd better finish it before she outgrows it.

3. Having lunch with My Man. Yup, the minute I dropped Lillian off at the school on Tuesday I whipped out my cell phone and called Andrew. "Wanna play?" I said, "All my chores are done and I'm officially and completely available." We can go eat at a place that doesn't provide crayons with the menu.

4. Working out. Speaking of lunch dates, I'm also back at the gym after eating my way through the summer as if it were a Festival of Food. Walking on the treadmills in front of my HGTV and Travel Channel screens, I love it--maybe I can finally rid myself of these pounds I picked up since spring. One can always hope. This brings me to Number Five on the list . . .

5. NOT eating. Whatever else I'm doing with my extra time I'm not eating. No no no. Not hot chocolate . . . or ice cream . . . or dark chocolate . . . or pasta . . . or cheese . . . or, or, or . . . On to Number Six.

6. Making cookies. Sigh. My list seems to be revolving around food--but you wouldn't believe how many cookies I make in a week. I probably make two or three batches each week, with 2 1/2-3 dozen cookies at a time. That's a lot of cookies. It's next to impossible keeping up with the way these mouths eat and only with some extra free time can I stay ahead of the appetites. A lot of cookies. Luckily I'm not really a cookie person or it would ruin Number Five on the list.

7. Finishing my books. I've been simultaneously reading Henderson the Rain King, Wives and Daughters and The Tavern Knight for six months now and still haven't finished them. I should be ashamed of myself for letting the heroes linger in the rising action for all this time--I have no excuse and it will be fixed.

8. Catching up on a good movie or two. If I want to pull out Pride and Prejudice or While You Were Sleeping and watch them for the 300th time, there's no one here to say anything about it--and I'm feeling so liberated about it. Blues Clues no longer! I guess that also means that I can listen to the music I want to in the car too--forget the Disney tunes, I can rock out as much as I want to now.

9. Working on a new template. I've been blogging seriously now for one year. Yup, haven't missed a day of posting since last September and something about having a birthday like that makes me look in the mirror and think I maybe could use a face lift. Metaphorically speaking that is. So now I finally have time to get things going so I can have that beautiful, shiny, sparkling, trophy template that will make all the other templates jealous. Oh it's going to be so fun!

Hydra Laundry10. Probably doing laundry. Even with all my free time I still can't escape washing clothes. Not if I ran at 70 mph for a million years could I get away from it. My laundry pile is like the Hydra, you do one load of wash and nine more loads magically appear on the laundry room floor which is why one can never completely finish doing the laundry, it's a physical impossibility--goes against the Prime Directive or something like that--so with all the free time you know I'll still be sorting whites and colors and folding socks.

11. Planning our trip. We've booked our tickets for our next family vacation in March and I need to get the planning done--hotels, car rentals, etc. The only problem is we're going to be going to Florida . . . anyone know of anything fun to do in Florida? I mean if only there were someplace we could go to have a good time---like a theme park or a beach or something. Well, we'll make the best of it you can be sure.

12. Taking up blogging. I need a hobby so I'm thinking of taking up blogging . . . again. When August arrived I was a bit burned out on the blogging thing (you caught the part where I said I hadn't missed a day of posting since last September, right?) and it seemed that so many people were taking vacations that I decided to offer myself a break. I've been posting but that's pretty much it. Oh an occasional comment here and there but generally just keeping quiet and getting my energy back for another year of posts. Yes, with all this free time I think I'll actually venture out into the blogosphere once again. If I'm not taking a nap.

And finally, the number one (or number 13 depending on how you look at it) thing I'm planning on doing with all my newfound freedom?

13. "Whatever I feel like I wanna do--GOSH!"

I can't believe it's only been a year. You've taken the blogging world by storm in such a short time. I've got two more years before my son goes off to school, plenty of time to figure out this blogging stuff.

Wow...sounds awesome. I want some free time too:( Happy TT:)

I'm not jealous. I'm not jealous.

Ok. I'm jealous.

I'll have free time in about 4.5 years.

Starting next week, though, I'll have one day a week where it's only my non-mobile, non-talking 5 month old and me. His sisters will be at school on Thursdays.

Wheee.

Well earned time :)

I HATE laundry! I feel like a hamster in a wheel. It NEVER ENDS!
Back to school here too! Except I still have 3 more years until the next and last one goes to school! ;-)

After so many years of devoted care of others, I covet, quiver and relish at the thought of my youngest starting school. WhatEVER shall I do with myself??

Of course, I have four more years...

It's lovely, isn't it?

And here I am contemplating throwing it all away to enter into the fray again. :S

My youngest starts Kindergarten next year...but we may just decide to have another one! In which case...add another five or six years on to the tally.

michelle: you are too cute. we keep running into each other at our various church thingies! you know that when i saw your little girl with daddy at strawb. last night that i instantly recognized her but i couldn't place her at first and then it clicked! aha, you are one of michelle's kiddos from her blog. it was so wild to see one of your kids from your blog. i probably sounded like a total dork telling them, oh hi, i read your mom's blog. i even told hubby i am so grateful to be Mormon. he was probably thinking what is this freak doing in my face telling me this for? ha.

one of these days, you and i will talk longer than hi and bye while hurrying off.

nighty night, kathleen/grateful

ps. and my green truck license plate also says "grateful," so you can't miss it when i happen to be at the same chapel as you those coincidental moments. take care girl. and thanks for sharing that testimony-building moment with me and not thinking me too silly a week ago.

School started here this week, too. I've done 1, 3, 4, 7, & 10. #1 was a necessity--I didn't bother this year trying to change my sleeping habits. 5:30 is a big change from 9. And #3 is very nice--even if half the time "lunch" is a euphemism. ;-)

My kids both go back Sunday. I do work part-time, but that's from home and still leaves me with *gasp* time to do other things. I've got a meeting at the gym for a program update set up Monday, I'm going to get my hair colored before people start pointing and laughing, I'll meet my husband or my girlfriends for lunch again, and I'm going to go grocery shopping in peace! Yippee!

1 and 3 are the first on my list once school starts on the fourth.

I am right there with you, sister. God bless the public school system!

Ok, I'm jealous! Congrats on all the kids being in school and enjoy your free time! :)

Long-awaited freedom at last! I would not be suffering either.

As for no. 11, thanks for making me laugh out loud. The kids want to see what is so funny, but they don't get the sarcasm. Somehow that made it even funnier for me. If do you go south to the Ft. Lauderdale area Wannado City is a really fun day for the kids.

My aunt's youngest started first grade last year. When I ask her (or you) what you do with your free time, believe me, it's because I'm envious. To the point of coveting. Like an actual sin.

Now I see why you didn't want my cookies! Brownies? ;)

Lisa said...

I love this list! When I quit my job (I worked from home, but still had to work every. single. day!), people wondered if I could handle doing "nothing" all day. Yea, I can handle it!

Mmmmm. I love cookies and should makes some, but I will eat them.

I don't know, I grew up in Florida, and I can't imagine any possible thing to do there. Hmmm.

Ah it's that thirteen thingummy do dah again! I don't believe the 1 year thing for a minute.
Cheers dears

Edward Family said...

Okay I have to know...what kind of cookies do you make? I'd feel so guilty if my kids ate that many cookies...they must be some healthy recipes? I have only made chocolate chip cookies. Could you share some recipes?

Chris said...

Yeah, a guy at my dh's work asked him if I was going to find a job b/c he thought I'd be bored at home.

Bored? I don't think so! I have a list a lot like yours.

Speaking of a Blogging vacation...I'm back for the most part. I've been posting fairly regularly again. I just got burned out from everything.

Woohoo! Enjoy your time to yourself! Being a teacher, I well understand that special time when you get to do what you WANT...but for me it's called: Summer!

Happy Relaxing!

Enjoy...and it sounds as though you are. I'll be honest. I'm a homeschooling mom who is a wee bit jealous of your 3 hours alone 5 days per week. :)

So totally jealous.

Sounds like fun to me! And I'm all for you baking lots of cookies, as long as you keep posting the recipes. ;)

Happy TT!

Well, if we're voting, I vote for 1 & 7. And I'd vote for cookies, too, if only I could be your next-door neighbor.

Well, I just wrote a long, thought-provoking and entertaining comment. It would've amazed you with it's wit and brilliance, I promise you, but my computer freaked out and erased it, and I'm not going to rewrite the whole thing.

Therefore...Great list. Can't wait until it's my turn.

Rock on with your bad self!

Jen said...

Only a year blogging? Wow! I thought for sure you'd been doing it longer!
Good list, I did a similar one a few weeks ago. Haven't done a bloody thing on it yet, but it's only been a week. I have high hopes for tomorrow. :)

Belladonna said...

Good for you for celebrating this season in your life!

As for laundry - there is a passage in the book Take Two Chocolates and Call Me in the Morning in which the author explains the only ones who don't have laundry to get caught up on are the naked and the dead. EVERYONE else has something to wash.

You're going to Florida? I'm so jealous. I did hear there's this small theme park there. Kind of small and no lines. You should check it out! *wink*
