I Could Eat These Forever

BlackberriesIf they have these at the grocery store I will buy them--it's a given. I cannot resist a bowl of blackberries and my love for them as turned me into a Food Horder.

I love my children and feed them well but let's face it, if I gave them the choice between a bowl of fresh, succulent, perfectly ripened blackberries and a bowl of Lucky Charms, they'd take the Lucky Charms. People like that don't deserve blackberries. Not that that would stop them from trying to get some of my precious berries--if food is going down they're there with their mouths open like a bunch of baby birds begging for a worm. If you don't believe it, just watch them when the Samples Ladies come out in Costco--they could be serving cream of asparagus waffles and my kids would be there, hands out, ready for a taste. Serve it in a cup and tell them it's free and suddenly they're starving.

So I buy these beauties on the sly, hiding them under the bread in the cart when the kids aren't looking, and eat them in my bedroom with the door locked. One . . . at . . . a . . . time.

Mmmm! When I was a kid, I had a secret stash of them in the woods. I'd only get a handful but it was worth it.

Cool front? Send it our way! It's all Indian summer and carpets with footprints from the humidity here in Connecticut. Beautiful picture. Delicious!

That's like me with mulberries. White or black, I don't care. I'll eat them till I'm sick

Y-U-M!

That was hilarious, Michelle. I totally relate.

The worst is when I'm generous and share them with my kids and they slobber all over them and halfway through they have the gall to declare that they don't like them.

Plain wrong.

That's funny--Blackberries are a swear word in Washington. They grow like a weed here, are impossible to kill, and have the nastiest prickles!! Although when September rolls around, you should see all the people out picking them off the "weeds" on the sides of the road.

Yummmmmm, where is the vanilla ice cream to go with them?

I've never had fresh blackberries, but I'm so excited because we planted a thornless variety this year.

Maybe next year I will be enjoying my own secret stash.

Michelle -

This one made me laugh out loud! I feel the same way about blackberries (and raspberries and good nectarines) !

I had bought a pint of blackberries last week and caved to my daughter's pleadings for a taste. She had the gall to spit it out and make a face! I nearly wept over the injustice of it...

Yes! An ode to blackberries. Now we're talking. Have you ever seen a wild or even transplanted bush in Alaska? That would be worth a long hike to find.

I don't think I've ever tried a blackberry before. They do look delicious!

I have certain treats I do that with just because I know if the kids get ahold of them I will get few or none!
When we lived in Oregon there were blackberry bushes all over the place where we were living my kids went out when they were coming out almost daily to eat them up!

We had them growing wild along our driveway, which was at least an 8th of a mile long. We would eat them and eat them, and pick them for pies and jam, it was endless! And very very yummy!

Hehehe..so you're hoarding them...you made me laugh because I could picture you all locked up in your bedroom with a bowl-ful of blackberries.

You should come see us next July - we have our own bushes! We just stroll down the driveway to the bottom of the hill and eat them right off the vine. One day Mary Margaret (who is 3) and Scott went by themselves and she had about 20. Scott didn't think she needed quite that many, so he said, "I don't think I can walk all the way up the hill if I can't have some of those blackberries." She pointed to the bushes and informed him, "These are mine. There are more over there."

I can totally relate to the hoarding. There's nothing worse than saving a treat for yourself and finding it gone! Happy WW

oh my goodness they look yummy.

Kids don't need blackberries. That's like giving caviar to an infant.

Here's to hoarding!

That reminds me of my Big Sis and crawfish. She LOVES crawfish, and living in Louisiana, she can eat all she wants each spring.

A couple of years ago, she and my brother in law had eaten at a local cajun restaurant and she came home with a bunch of uneaten boiled crawfish. She carefully peeled them all and had herself a nice big bowl of them to eat after work the next day.

She came home and my brother in law had eaten all of her crawfish.

He did the exact same thing once with a piece of Italian Creme Cake that she had been given by a friend.

I can't believe he's still alive.

We used to pick blackberries when I was a kid and Mama would make cobblers out of them. One of my great childhood memories.

I love blackberries, too, not only because they taste delicious but also because I have fond memories of picking blackberries at my grandmother's house. They were warm from the sun and juicy. I never could resist the really plump fat ones just out of my reach. I would go to great lengths to reach them.

They look delicious! I wish I could say I had to hoard any kind of fruit. It's chocolate that is hidden in my pantry (or freezer or desk). :)

I bought some blackberries at the farmer's market yesterday and it was so much fun to see my baby eat them... watch the black juice running down her chin. It was her first time to taste them.

I love them too!

We had these growing back home in NY and when they would ripen, I'd be out picking and make blackberry pies and freeze them...

Yummmmmm

I horde those whenever I can. Oh, yes!!

I know it's crazy, but I've never had a blackberry. They look...strange to me.

I love these too. My in-laws have several plant on their property and we always schedule a visit as the berries are ripening. We make homemade ice cream and have a little ice cream with our berries. I was so sad that this year the crop was not very good. Too much rain.

My replacement has been the blackberry milk shakes at Jack in the Box, yummy.

I too love these and they grow wild here. So glad to have your blog.

You are hilarious...let me share with you my blackberry experience...(you know, since you asked ;)). When I was growing up, from 4 till I left home, we would go to my grandparents house in southwest Missouri...they had/have a ranch...it's beautiful and it's filled with blackberries! Now during blackberry season, it is also tick season...so we would be BURNING up in our sock OVER our pants with our long sleeved shirts tucked into our pants...and our collars buttoned up to the top. But we would pick some blackberries!!! And I am not talking a few, I am talking Granny's freezer would be FULL of blackberries by the time we finished picking. It was amazing.

Oh, and I hord my blueberries now...

We have wild blackberry bushes growing all over our area. My kids love to eat them.

Me too!!! Mmmmm...

But, I sure hate picking 'em.

We had a blackberry bush in our backyard when I was little. My mother taught us to "pick one, eat one." We never got too many full baskets! LOL.

Hmmm THESE ARE MY FAVORITE as well! I remember picking them wild as a child!

Yup, it's true. Some foods need to be fully respected before they can be shared. Hey, that's the way it is; we don't make the rules. ;)

We go blackberry picking every year and I make blackberry skillet cobbler with them. It is soooooo divine!
