Doughnuts? Donuts? Well however you spell it these aren't quite Krispy Kremes but they're a lot better for you and are relatively easy to make, especially if you have a bread machine. They're frequently requested around here, make a great breakfast and are tasty with hot cider.
Combine the following ingredients in this order in your bread machine and set your machine to "dough" cycle:
1 cup milk
¼ cup wheat germ
3 ¾ cups flour
3 tablespoon olive oil
3 tablespoon brown sugar
1 large grated apple
1 large egg
2 ½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ginger
1 tablespoon fast-acting yeast
When the dough is ready, shape into 14 donuts and let them rise 30 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until browned and done. Immediately dip in a cinnamon/sugar mix (you can dip it in butter first if you dare, the taste is worth it but the calories may kill you).

Those look very tasty! I'll give it the kid taste test and see how it does.

These look yummy! We'll have to give them a try!
Fruity pastries that aren't loaded with lardishness. I love it! Thanks for sharing this.
YUM! I'm going to try these babies out for sure!!!
Wow.
I so want to make those. Donuts are my #1 weakness.
But I have not a bread machine. Any ideas about how to make them by hand?
These I will have to try! Need to put wheat germ on my grocery list.
Sounds great and I know the kids will love them!
How did you know the guilt I didst feel yesterday when I ate that deep-fried apple fritter? Finally, an out!
I'm going to try these next weekend!
That looks do-able. Maybe during Christmas break...I like baking breakfast goodies for my family, but I never have time during a regular week of school. Summer and breaks, they eat well.
If you make them into rounds and then cut out the middle with the smallest of biscuit makers (I have a cool set from William Sonoma) you can make donut holes too! My girls love those! My oldest loves them rolled in cinnamon sugar, while my youngest is a powdered sugar nut. :-)
Wow, yum-o again. Where do you get these awesome recipes from? I puffy heart your blog!
These look really good. I think my kids would even like them! They sound pretty easy, too. Thanks!
What kind of flour did you use? Can I use whole wheat, or is it too heavy for that recipe?
Oh you could make them the traditional way just as easily: just mix a bit of the water with the yeast, then mix in the dry ingredients and apple, etc. Just add the flour little by little until it's the right consistency, then let it rise. Punch it down, let it rise. Something like that--it's been so long since I've made it the old fashioned way I don't remember it well.
I use all-purpose flour, but you could probably use one-third to half whole wheat but you'd need to decrease the overall flour volume to compensate--add it little by little to see. Otherwise it'll ruin the texture.
Ms. Scribbet,
Nope, you spelled Aston Martin perfectly correct.
Anytime,

These look delicious! Who can resist a donut? Thanks for the recipe!
mmm....sound delicious. can't wait to make 'em!
Wow! I'm about to dig out the bread machine and dust it off for these! Maybe I won't get rid of it after all....
Sometime I really must tell you about an email exchange my husband had with his colleagues (yes, this is what international criminal lawyers do at work all day!) about DOGNUTS and whether one should indulge or not...
This recipe however, looks divine.
Ooh those look too yummy and I love me a good doughnut/donut...whatever. I need to stay away from them though I'm trying to lose weight!
Ooooo, I love any fried food that can be made without actually frying it.
perfect for our upcoming "get into the christmas mood" weekend!! :)
I tried making these today. The only change was that I substituted ground flax seed for the wheat germ.
The dough came out very sticky for me, so I kneaded in some extra flour. They came out very tasty and are excellent with coffee. :)
I made these yesterday after seeing the link on Design Mom. These are very simple to make the traditional way also. Heat the milk to 110-115 degrees. Pour on top of the brown sugar (I used 4T.) and one packet of rapid rise yeast, and let it sit for 5-10min. Then add the melted and cooled butter (I used butter instead of olive oil), egg, and apple (I would recommend finely shredding it). Then you gradually stir in the flour, spices and salt that you have already combined. I started out with 1 1/2 c. whole wheat pastry flour and 1 1/2 c. bread flour. I added more bread flour when kneading the dough. I also used 1/2 tsp. nutmeg instead of the ginger. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled. Punch down the dough, and roll it out 1/2 inch thick. I used a 2 3/4 inch biscuit cutter. Wait to cut out the "hole" until you have transfered the doughnut to the baking sheet. I underbaked mine just a bit. I dipped the tops in melted butter and cinnamon sugar. Thanks for the yummy recipe!
Yum. So I totally became invested in your site this afternoon and have added this to the list of things I absolutely must do/make/eat this coming weekend. My mouth is actually watering.
I made these this morning and blogged about it!
