Cookie Cutter Display Cases

Cookie Cutter Display CasesAnd as a little extra today for those who may not be entering the Write-Away contest . . .

My grandmother gave me some of her old cookie cutters and with my newly remodeled kitchen I thought that I could make a nice wall display out of them.

The Martha Stewart Living May issue had several ideas for lining and painting display boxes along with a link to Meadows Display Cases which makes wooden shadow boxes. The site has various materials to choose from for the box and a variety of colors for the lining, all at reasonable prices (I don't know if you've ever had something custom framed but you might as well take out a second mortgage). I selected an eight by eighteen-inch box that I lined with suede matching my chair seats and secured the cookie cutters with pins to the back. I am especially fond of the little Alaska-shaped cutter and as the shadow box comes with two tiny keys to lock the front clasps I can easily open the box should I ever care to use that sweet little cutter to make cookies.

The only drawback is that if you live somewhere that doesn't get UPS ground delivery you'll be paying more for the shipping than you would for the case, though it's still much cheaper than getting a custom framing job. Cookie cutters, vintage silverware, teacups, all would look charming displayed in one of these boxes on a kitchen wall.

Anyone else going to Blogher 2008 in San Francisco this July? Guess who got tickets for Christmas? Yes, Andrew scored HUGE points with this gift--he won a drawing at work last month for a bunch of air miles and kept it a secret from me until I opened the box on Christmas morning. Woo hoo! I'm registered and ready to go--anyone else planning on being there?

Wow, way to go Andrew! What an amazing gift.

I so wish I was able to go, but it's not in the cards since I was in SF last spring and will be in New England in August.

I love this idea! I always see little odds and ends like cookie cutters and other old gadgets at thrift stores and flea markets, but never buy them because I think: What would I do with them? Now I know! Watch, I won't be able to find any now.

My Mom has all those cookie cutters (minus the state of Alaska, which is very, very cool). It was like opening your blog and seeing some family friends preserved in a display box.

What a neat decorating idea! I love things like that, esp the Alaska shaped cookie cutter. I have one for the lower peninsula of Michigan and frost them in blue and white (for all our water and snow:)

Congratulations on getting to go the the BlogHer convention!! I would really like to go. After you return I would love to read about your adventures there.

Take Care,

Trixie

That is a good idea, my grandmother also gave me some of her cookie cutters. They would make a great display.

Cute idea!

I'm envious of your tickets, though. It's just too far away for me, though I understand that there will be a traveling BlogHer tour...which is coming through Nashville and Atlanta!

Ok, that is awesome about your BlogHer tix. I am reaallly hoping to be there! Another blogger offered to let me stay at her place- I better check to see if the offer still stands!

And the cookie cutter display- such a great idea. I have some of my Gram's cutters that I treasure!

I am a cookie cutter fiend, but if I put all of them in display cases, they'd probably cover an entire wall.

I'm pretty sure I'll be going to BlogHer again this year. I hope to finally meet you!

My mom has the Santa Claus cutter. I hope. I'd best find out. What a cool idea.

I love that display idea! My mother, and probably grandmother, passed the same gingerbread man to me. Mine is languishing in a plastic bag inside the loaf pans in a cupboard. Yours looks much happier.

Andrew! Way to score!
No, I won't be at BlogHer this year, I'm holding out for Denver. ; )

Congrats on the great score of tickets! I would love to go. I've never been to San Francisco.

Several of those cookie cutters look familar. I know my mom just used the gingerbread man to make cookies for Christmas, and I've seen the Santa and Heart one.
Wonderful idea to frame them, and if you can do it yourself, I totally agree with you, having anything framed costs are so expensive.

If you drop by, I've given you an award.

What an amazing gift! You are so lucky! I wish I would have went when it was in Chicago, but it was bad timing for me. San Fran is a bit of a hike so I probably won't go this year. I hope you have fun (sniff, sniff)

BTW- cute box too!

I'm glad you clarified what the Alaska cookie cutter was! What a clever idea for a kitchen. Very cool, indeed!

That's so cute, and such a sweet idea. I hung six of my grandmother's hankies from the wall as a soft collage and it looks so pretty, and reminds me of her.

I've got a little gingerbread ornament made out of wax that my grandmother gave me when I was little. (She died when I was four) I'm afraid it'll get decimated by my children if I try to put it on the tree, but I still want it to be a part of our Christmas decorations. I wonder if a shadow box would work?

I'm very bad at noticing things so this is really late but thanks for mentioning my blog in your site of the week a while back.

I will have just given birth at that point, but would love to go. Actually, no I wouldn't, I don't do well in huge crowds like that. I would spend all that money, be surrounded by lots of people and come home having only actually talked to one or two people. I'm weird like that.

Oh, and I love that you can still use your cookie cutters and have them displayed at the same time.

I actually have a couple of these cookie cutters and they were my grandmother's as well :)
Great idea. Happy 2008!

What a great idea with the cookie cutters. I have some of these in a drawer from my mom. I might have to use this idea for our home.

Congrats on the Blogher tix. San Fran in July, Mmmmm. I love the cookie cutter display, by the way. What a great idea. We had the same santa profile cutter on the far left when I was a kid. I didn't know what it was until I was older.

I have the same cookie cutters (minus AK) in both silver and copper. They were my mom's. How did they mount them so they don't slide around once they are hanging up?

Have fun at BlogHer!
