Why is it the weirdest conversations happen in the car? Probably because that's where I live 80% of my life, it's just my odds I suppose. Anyway, I was with the kids in the car when David asked:
"Mom?"
"Huh?"
"What's Lent?"
"Oh that's a celebration--well it's not really a celebration I guess it's more of a plain old event or something--where people--mostly Catholics I guess--get ready for Easter by giving something up. Usually something they really like."
"Why?"
"They give something up to show that they're sacrificing something for Jesus. Kind of a way to show their devotion."
There was a pause as David contemplated this. Spencer was reading a book in the far back seat and said without looking up, "I know what I'd give up for Lent."
"What would you give up?"
"David."
Excuse me??
"We're NOT giving up your brother for Lent."
"Fine."
Any case studies on giving up a sibling for Lent? Apparently Spencer's ready to convert to Catholicism.

ROFL.
What a character.
BWAH HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That kid is hilarious.
Well there's always next year....
Too funny!
Such a sacrificing little fella, isn't he? :-)
LOL! That is the best I've heard yet.
LOL! Your kids are hilarious!!! (I'm remembering those snowmen they made as well)
We gave up television. I decided next year we can give up television, or I can give up yelling, but it's a bad idea to do both. (We made it, but it wasn't pretty.)

LOVE IT! I think I would have said the same thing with my sister :)
I tried that one year. My parents weren't thrilled. Nor were they thrilled when I tried to give up school or church.
I'll tell ya, Lent is one of the most entertaining times of year in Catholic households . . . even though it's really supposed to be a time of reflection, prayer, and sacrifice . . .
TOO FUNNY!
Hmmm. My sister actually did convert to Catholicism - I always thought it was so she could marry her Catholic husband, but now I'm not so sure . . .
LOL! Life is never boring when you're a mother :)
Love it!! Wouldn't that have been the best as a kid?? I totally would have sacrificed my sister for Lent!
Oh this makes he laugh so hard. Every day we pass a Luthern Church that has various quotes and thoughts on their board out front. We too had a very similar converstation. My son Sawyer was fully ready to give up his brother Tanner for lent as well. I explained to him I think maybe the idea is to give up something that would be more of a sacrifice. DOn't you just love the relationships of brothers. lol
April
LOL. My son has offered to give up school and even veggies. He loves Lent just that much.
Well, you *did* just say before that that you're supposed to give up something you like. ;)
I can't wait until Seamus is old enough to come up with amazing conversations like these.
Ha ha ha! Somehow, I think he missed the meaning of sacrifice...
LOL. Well... you didn't fault him for being honest, did you?
(grin) They don't let us Catholics give up people for Lent, either... Such a sweet little one, willing to sacrifice that way!!
That's great.
I gave up white wine, which I hardly ever drink. Just when I'm cooking a nice supper. Boy was that terrible! When you can't have something you really want it.
We also gave up chocolate one year, and TV and movies, and my kids gave up their game boys. It was valuable, I guess.
But the best part was that boy, were we all looking forward to Easter!
hehe well in a strange way it is a compliment, one is suppose to give up something that they love and hate to live without...a brother's love!
BRILLIANT. And to think I gave up chocolate...
At least he didn't try to sell him (as my oldest boy did his younger sibling). The kid was only worth seventy-five cents.
funny kid!
Chocolate vs. Sibling. hmmm...that's a toughie.
It's funny how siblings are. My six-year-old is often heard singing the song from Oliver,
"One boy, boy for sale, he's going cheap, only seven shillings."
I know she loves her brother. Someday she'll know it too.
So nice to hear how much our children really love each other, eh?
That seriously CRACKS ME UP!
Gotta love siblings.
Too funny!
