Celebrities That I Wouldn't Mind Meeting

24K Dress by Shabby AppleSo I've got THE SHOES.

Last week I asked for your help in choosing shoes to go with my new party dress courtesy of Shabby Apple (oh how I love that store) and you came through. You gave me the direction I needed in my moment of crisis. You know, I think if President Bush had had advisers as smart as you fine people there wouldn't be any talk of economic crisis or recession or stupid stuff like that.

The votes have spoken and burgundy won with an overwhelming 51% of the vote. Obama himself would love to be able to boast such popularity. Then peep toes made a strong showing with 37%.

The only anomaly was the height. Seems a majority of kind commentators left words of encouragement, telling me to wear the shoes tall and be proud of it yet oddly enough mid heels nudged out very high heels when the votes were counted.

Query by Via SpigaSo I can only assume that that means there are a lot of you out there afraid to tell a six foot woman that she needs to be realistic and forget waving to the crowd from the tree line. I can take a hint. But that doesn't mean I'm going to go with it . . .

I bought the burgundy Via Spigas and held them close to my heart for a good ten minutes in a rapture only Imelda Marcos understands but then when I tried them on I found them rather uncomfortable. Okay pretty uncomfortable. They're just so darn high that the balls of my feet didn't go five minutes without letting me know that they didn't appreciate the treatment they were receiving.

So to put this excruciatingly long story to bed, I still have those shoes but I went back and ordered two other pairs of slightly shorter heels that I'll try out before making the decision. Love that free shipping! I could actually keep both pairs of shoes, return the first and still save a bucketload of money. Go figure.

Anyway, on to the subject of this week's list.

The point is that I'm getting ready for Hollywood next week (I never thought I'd ever say that) and if you missed why it's because Suave is hosting this year's Glamour Reel Moments film festival where women actors can pick from Glamour Magazine's readers' stories and make their favorite into a short film.

Suave is sponsoring this year's event and is bringing a group of bloggers down for the occasion. I have to say that I've thought their new campaign showing how Moms can reclaim themselves and be beautiful while blowing noses is a great one--it speaks to me.

So thanks to Suave I'm going to the film festival and party afterward and according to the information I received Demi Moore and Courtney Cox are making their directorial debuts. Besides them and past alums such as Kirsten Dunst, Bryce Dallas-Howard, Jennifer Aniston and Kate Hudson their casts will be there too--last year with people like Chevy Chase, Dakota Fanning, Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn to name a few.

Which leads me to ask: "Which celebrities would YOU want to most meet?" Here's my list.

1. Clint Eastwood. Because he's, you know, CLINT EASTWOOD. I actually haven't seen that many of his movies but the ones I have seen are pretty amazing in the way they're crafted. Andrew and I went to see Nights in Rodanthe last weekend and they had a trailer for Eastwood's latest movie, Changeling, with Angelina Jolie (actually there were several trailers there that looked pretty good, I love it when a movie has great previews before it starts--it's like giving me a tasty appetizer before a meal. I never miss the previews.) Anyway, Changeling looked good and Eastwood has such an interesting off-camera life that I'd love to sit down with him in his vineyard and chat. What do you say? Can I come over for dinner?

2. Will Smith. Not sure why but this goofy-looking guy is so fun to watch on screen but I wouldn't mind hanging out with him and his family for the afternoon over a game of Scrabble. Wouldn't mind at all. I love his movies and have been a fan since he was doing rap as the Fresh Prince (yes I'm ancient, just ask my kids). Then the real clincher is that several years ago I read that he was a English grammar freak who loved correct usage and loved studying it as a kid which really just sealed the deal for me. My new best friend. Of course, someone also told me recently that he's really into Scientology which though it might seem like that would turn me off instead just peaks my interest. I've never met a Scientologist before so why not Will Smith?

3. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement. Not heard of these guys? Well they form a duo called Flight of the Conchords which is a Grammy-winning comedy team from New Zealand (haven't I said before that anything from New Zealand is cool? These guys just back me up). They call themselves "Formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo" and they're a hoot. Actually they're pretty great musicians as well but they're fun-ny.

The best place to meet these guys would probably be while we were all just hanging out at a park--so long as they brought their guitars.

NBC's Brian Williams4. Brian Williams. Yup, you read that right. Brian Williams as in NBC's Brian Williams, news anchor. This might seem an odd choice but I wanted to have a journalist on the list and he's not only my favorite but he too is very funny. I've seen interviews with him when he's not doing his job and he's got such a quick, dry wit that I long ago decided he was my favorite news guy. Not that that means I have a list of favorite news guys--that would be rather odd don't you think? I guess I'd want to meet him at State dinner.

I mean, as long as you're dreaming you might as well dream big, right? A State dinner is about as big as you can get and if Mr. Williams proves to be boring then you always have the First Lady's dress to check out.

5. Tina Fey. I'd like to meet her for several reasons: because she's the "it" girl right now, because she's beautiful without it only being about her face, because she's been able to make a career out of her talents as a comedian, actress and writer (rather unusual don't you think?) There just aren't too many women in Hollywood who've been able to keep one foot in writing and one foot in acting, she may be the most successful woman at it ever. Anyone know someone else who has been able to do what she's done? I'm not a huge SNL fan, haven't watched it since my college days (which is, whew! EONS ago) but I think I would like to meet Ms. Fey--and I'd want to meet her in her office.

6. Ellen Degeneres. She makes me laugh, what can I say? I do get the feeling, however, that she's as crazy as the next Hollywood whacko though I haven't got any data to back that up, it's just a gut feeling I've got. Anyone seen her hanging out with Tom Cruise lately? You might meet her coming out of your therapist's office. I could see that happening.

7. Queen Latifah. Her real name? Dana Elaine Owens and I don't know what it is about this woman but I love watching her on screen. She's got this something that is fascinating. It could be because she's beautiful but I don't think that's it because there are others who are more beautiful than she is that don't have "it" and I don't think it's because of her music because I've never heard any of it. It couldn't be her personal life because that's been a bit more dramatic than the average Joe's life so I'm lost. I don't know why I like her but I do. Maybe it's because she's a hoot as Gwen Eiffel. She'd be fun meeting at a mall shopping for shoes, though I suspect her idea of shoes and my idea of shoes are about $400 different.

Ladainian Tomlinson8. Ladianian Tomlinson. Yes, running back for the Chargers (and do you have any idea how long it's taken me to accumulate that piece of knowledge?) No, I'm not a football fan but if I ever was to meet this man I would automatically be exalted to "Supreme Mom of the Universe" in the eyes of my boys, they would think I was the coolest thing ever, no questions asked. Well actually they'd ask a lot of questions so I probably should study up before I actually meet the man because if I ever did I wouldn't have a clue about what to ask him or say. Because football? I know nothing. I know enough to get an autograph from him for David and Spencer though--at least I know that much. Don't know where I'd want to meet him but I hope I'd have a pen handy--I'd also better bring Spencer's prized football card because otherwise I'd have no idea what the guy looks like even if I did meet him.

9. Sandra Bullock. Maybe this rests solely on my love for While You Were Sleeping but I wouldn't mind meeting Ms. Bullock, especially if accompanied by her motorcycle-lovin' husband Jesse James. That just seems such an odd match but it just goes to show you never know a person from their screen presence--though I have heard rumors that she has a "colorful" vocabulary. Somehow that doesn't mesh with her sadly-sweet-yet-tragic persona she plays over and over again in The Lake House, While You Were Sleeping and Practical Magic (to name a few). Kind of the same role over and over but it's fun and I would like to catch lunch with her at a fabulous Mexican restaurant near her home in Texas.

10. Gwyneth Paltrow. This one I actually might have a shot at because Ms. Paltrow is a former Glamour Reel Moments participant and the info I received made it sound as if she might be there next week. Who knows? I think she's appealing because she's got that thing reminiscent of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn--kind of a mix of both. Skinny and willowy like Audrey but her face and coloring are like Grace's. If I had to pick two actresses that I'd most want to be compared with those two would be it--they're pretty much the epitome of style, glamor and grace. Besides, I pretty much feel like we're connected already--Spencer pounds out Cold Play songs constantly on the piano. CONSTANTLY. I think I'd like to meet her over a gourmet hot chocolate in a breakfast-at-Tiffany's setting.

11. Brian Regan. I don't need to say much about why I'd love to meet him, this clip explains it all:

Part two of this skit can be found here. He's the kind of guy you'd like to find yourself seated next to on an airplane--plenty of entertainment and conversation the whole way.

Adam Levine, Maroon 512. Adam Levine. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist for Maroon 5. And actually I don't know that I'd really want to meet him, just maybe see him but on the sly without all the gawking--like seeing him at the next table at a restaurant. There's just something about his voice--I wonder if it would have the same effect if you met him in person. My mom always had a thing for Steve Perry's voice (tell me you remember Journey?) and I guess Adam Levine's voice does the same thing for me.

I am so with you on the Conchords and Brian Regan. This bit about going to the emergency room makes me hyperventilate/cry because I laugh so hard it hurts. It hurts! I've watched it a zillion times and it never gets old.

I don't see the link to Part 2, though?

And...this may be TMI, but thanks to the Flight of the Conchords, "business socks" is part of our marital vocabulary. And the Hiphopopotamus and the Rhymenocerus rap song is brilliant.

I have a thing for Steve Perry's voice. How old are you? Your MOM? :)

LOVE Will Smith. I could just scoop him up and keep him forever. Shoot, most of your list would be similar to mine. Except for the news anchor. Sorry.

My husband and I love Brian Regan. :) Hmmm...other celebrities I'd love to meet: Colin Firth, Val Kilmer and Diane Sawyer.

I did wonder about the height of the heels on those burgundy shoes. Not because you'd be waving from the treetops, that's just down to confidence, but from a comfort point of view. You've got to be able to stand in them FOR A LONG TIME.
As to the meeting people most of my film "heroes" are now dead which makes me feel like sort of OLD - at sixty-five!!

I am so with you on the Conchords and also Ladianian Tomlinson. Do you know about all of his charity work? Suffice it to say, he is an EXCELLENT role model for your boys.

I would have to agree with the Will Smith, and Queen Latifah...Though I have many, many more. :) I hope that you get to meet some really interesting people at your party. Have fun!

have you ever been to hollywood? i grew up in so cal, and having been there tons of times, it is incredibly boring to me. but i know people love it. and i'm six foot and i tell you to bust out the big heels!!!! you will look fabulous, your legs will look great, and for some reason, i feel incredibly feminine wearing them. i've not had that feeling too much in my life.

one more thing, please DO NOT wear nylons. it is boiling hot out there still, nylons make ones legs look like stuffed sausages if not wearing really super expensive ones, and it's hard to find a seamless toe kind so that you can wear them with open toed shoes. go treat yourself to a pedicure and bare those legs. white legs are much better than ugly nylons on them. (sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine when people wear nylons with open toed shoes. with runs in them no less. and think they are somehow more dressed up because of it.)

I used to love Will Smith, until I read about his whole new open marriage deal. Now I just think he's a massive jerk. It was really disappointing, as far as you can really be disappointed by a celebrity.

Stephen Colbert! Oh how I want to meet him. He's brilliant!

I hope you get to meet everyone on your wish list...and then, of course, tell us everything about them!

As for the shoe dilemma, better read this post http://lysaterkeurst.blogspot.com/2008/10/i-am-having-shoe-crisis.html.

I also grew up in SoCal and warn you it is HOT. I would wear a strappy shoe, your choice of heel height, and avoid the heat and discomfort of a closed shoe.

You'll have more fun if your feet aren't hurting!

WOW. I don't know how I would get myself elegant enough for Hollywood, so I'm seriously impressed. I would want to meet Will Smith too. Also Emma Thompson, who seems brilliant.

OOh- I can't WAIT to see Queen Latifah in The Secret Life of Bees. Just finished the book and it was fabulous in a Fried Green Tomatoes kind of way. There's no way the movie could contain all the details of emotion that the book had, but it's gotta be good. And Queen Latifah was made for the part of August!

Okay, Michelle, I hafta tell you I didn't see the logic in most of your choices this time...until Adam Levine. Now I'm totally with you.

Have you seen him sing "Harder to Breathe" with Rob Thomas on YouTube? I might have to post that today...

Loved Brian Regan. And I really needed to laugh this morning, so double bonus!

Brian Williams was HYSTERICAL on SNL a while back. I have a friend who just shot a movie with Will Smith and says he's great. AND I just saw Maroon 5 in concert and that Adam Levine is looking FINE.

Those 2 CDs are marvy for making married love to. (They're probably great for other types of sex as well; it's just that married sex is what I've been having for a long time!!)

How cool would it be if you were to actually meet Gwyneth?? I love it.

I love Adam Levine's voice, too. And Steve Perry's. People think I'm weird for liking Journey (and Chicago) so much, but they're awesome in my book!

This is a great list. We saw the Conchords on cable a few years back and knew they would go on to great things.
I would add Viggo Mortensen, Jodie Foster, Melissa Gilbert (she and I "grew up together" with Little House), and several people who are dead (Paul Newman, Dan Fogelberg, Michael Landon, Bill Bixby) and I'm bummed I missed the chance. As if I ever had one. :)

I agree- Brian Regan would be the best person to sit next to on a plane!! LOL!:) HILARIOUS!

I love the Conchords! My husband introduced me to them (virtually, via watching their videos on YouTube). They crack me up every time.

I was just talking about how I love to watch Queen Latifah. I would also love to interview Meg Ryan.

Great celebrity list. I want to meet Ellen, too. She is from New Orleans, and I think she is funny. George Clooney, Emma Thompson, andd all of the cast from "The Office" would be on my list. And I would LOVE to speak to Tina Fey.

I didn't know Will Smith is an English grammar freak! That puts him way up on my list, too!!

ShabbyInTheCity said...

I agree about Gwyneth! Love Coldplay too...and Flight of the Concords..."Foo Da Fafa"!
Once upon a time I walked into a gift shop in Vermont and there stood Charles Bronson! How wild is that? I sold eyeglasses to Amy Grant and sunglasses to Marie Osmond :) I would like to meet Shirley Temple Black.

Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston and George Clooney!

Fun list, and gorgeous shoes! Regarding Queen Latifah - her "The Dana Owens Album" released in 2004 is wonderful. Our jazz station played many songs from it regularly and I fell in love with it. She has an amazing voice!

Adam Levine is yummy!!!! :) Shhh... don't tell Curtis :)

I'd pass on Tina Fey, she's brutalized Sarah Palin.

I want to meet Brian Williams too!

Very happy to see them.

You're so lucky you get the chance to hobnob with celebs. From your list I pick Will Smith because well, he's Will Smith. Seems like a nice guy and I like his movies. I would love to meet Queen Latifah, too. So talented and so confident in her pluz size beauty. I've sort of "met" Clint Eastwood and his wife Deena. My husband is a media guy and used to work in the same town as the wife who is a former TV anchor. Never talked to them, just observed from afar but seemed like just ordinary people. I hope you get to meet him and post if he's really just a regular senior citizen.

I love Brian Regan! Hilarious!

When meeting someone famous I would imagine it would take me a couple minutes to remind myself that they are just a person with thoughts and feelings just like me and then hopefully I would be able to get past the "being famous" thing and chat away :)

I think Brian Regan is so funny. I always want everyone I know to see his videos because everyone needs to laugh, and laugh and laugh like he makes you do. :)

There is a nasty rumor going around that I invite people over just to make them watch it :)

Dawn Penguin said...

I find it amusing that you want to meet Will Smith, in part, because he is an "English grammar freak who loved correct usage" and yet you said he "peaked" your interest instead of "piqued" (which is the correct spelling of that term). :-)

Quite a list! I haven't heard of several of them. Hope you get to meet some!

Hope said...

That was a great list of Celebs. If you met Nicole Kidman, you wouldn't be the tallest woman in the room. One of the things she said after divorcing Tom Cruise "I can wear heels again". She said it on David Letterman.

J said...

Did you mean to say Tiny Fey, instead of Tina?

Ted's mom was in a Clint Eastwood movie back in the 70s, so Ted got to meet him. I know, and you've met ME, so that's close, right?

Susan Bearman said...

Oy, those heels make my feet hurt just looking at them. I would have to pick Jon Stewart because he makes me LAUGH. I'm with you on Queen Latifah — I think because she seems like a real person. And Henry Simmons just because he's so beautiful.

O....M.....G....!!!!! Going to Hollywood! WOW, you go girl!!! Will I see you on TV ??? You are going to be famous too!! :-) I also love the suave commercials with the woman that goes from pregnant to kids hanging off of her, to holding the garbage bag, to ...yes, blowing her nose....and then voila, she looks beaufitul and fabulous! I want to meet Will Smith, I have thought he was so amazing since the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and he is an amazing actor and seems like he is a true blue, down to earth, funny guy. He would be my top pick! You have some great choices though! I also think Ellen would be fun but I think you might have the right hunch on the crazy as the next whacko out there! Have a great time!! and rock you heels!

Great list! Flight of the Concords are my absolute favs! Business time is the best song. And Brian Regan is the funniest comedian out there! Walk on the Moon is pee your pants funny.

Glad the shoes and the dress are all fixed up. Regarding the dress, I'm a little bothered by that wide hem being so obvious. maybe its just the photo or its a new style. Have a wonderful time and post a photo!

This is only sorta kinda related, but I need a bit of advice you might be able to help me on. There is a strong chance I might be moving to AK sooner (like in a month) than we thought, do you have any idea what the typical women's dress code is for office work? I do have one woman friend up there, but she has to dress ultra conservative (suits) since she works for the federal government. I'd most likely be working for the private sector. Any advice you can give me? Tennessee is pretty conservative, but we do wear a lot of jeans...much less conservative than Ohio offices, however.
