Friday night all six of us were downstairs watching television while we waited for some dinner guests to arrive for dinner. I'd just finished fixing dinner and Andrew had just come home from work so we sat down with the kids who had picked out an episode of Spongebob Squarepants--the one where he gets on the wrong bus and gets stuck in a town way outside the limits of Bikini Bottom. Spongebob waits for the return bus and every time a bus comes he misses it.
Spongebob turns and looks the other way and misses a bus, he goes across the street to the candy vending machine and misses another, he ties his shoe and misses again. Over and over again in that classic stupid humor that has us all cracking up (I don't know if you aware of how much I love Spongebob--which I hesitate for fear of revealing my total lack of sophistication for all the world to see).
Anyway, our guests came, the evening was nice and that was that until the next day when I was talking with Andrew during our daily lunchtime phone chat.
"You know what's really weird?" he said.
"No, what?"
"Well I was thinking while I was eating lunch about how we were all watching Spongebob last night."
"Yea?" I answered, wondering where this was going.
"You know how Spongebob kept missing the bus?"
"Okaaaaay . . . ." I said.
"Well I was thinking about how when he kept missing the bus that I was really, really rooting for him. I really wanted him to make the bus."
"What??"
"I mean I recognized that it's a cartoon and everything but it was this weird realization that I was really really pulling for him. I knew he wasn't going to get on but every time I kept hoping this was the time he was going to make it. When he went across the street to get the candy I was thinking, 'NO! Stay where you are! Don't go across the street! You're going to miss it again!'"
"Andrew?"
"What?"
"You know I love you right?"
"Yea."
"So maybe you oughta lay off the cartoons for a bit okay?"
"Oh come on, don't tell me you weren't thinking it to."

I thought he was going to say something about how we miss the bus in our daily lives because of small distractions. Oh well. :) Happy Tuesday!
That's awesome. I've seen an episode or two in my time, and you just have to love SpongeBob. One of my favorite lines was from an episode where a crime was committed, and Patrick was determined to find the culprit. Somehow Patrick was falsely accused and, as the police are arresting him he exclaims, "I was looking for myself the whole time and I didn't even know it! It's the perfect crime!" Oh, it just cracks me up.
Too funny. I think it's great that you can all watch something as a family! How many people can say that? You go, Andrew! I'd root for SpongeBob too!
Would it be horrible to say I have never watched a sponge bob episode.
:)
Bwahahaha! I like your man. He and I think alike.
It is great that you prefaced your feedback to your son with "you know I love you, right?" Always good to lay that foundation first. I wonder if this approach would work on my husband...

Am I sick, or what?
Ahhh, SpongeBob. That is the one show that both my three year old and my five year old will sit happily and watch together. Only, we don't have cable. We own four dvds, which means I have seen those episodes OVER and OVER and OVER...
It's nice to know Andrew is rooting for the little guy! :)
That is so awesome! I thought for a moment he was going to have a deep thought there for us, some connection to our lives. But no...just wanted SB to make the bus! LOL!
But I am curious. WERE you thinking it too? HMMM? 'Fess up. Has Spongebob prompted these deep thoughts in you as well?
very nice - my kids adore sponge bob - he may be annoying - but there is always a nice lesson to be learned in each show
You know, I still want the Titanic to miss the icebergs every time I see that movie 'A Night to Remember' ... knowing it is true and so many died still makes my heart flip sadly. Strange what we get caught up in..
Sponge Bob is brilliant. I am endlessly entertained by it and not ashamed to admit it. :)
I've seen that episode far too often. Andrew is exactly like my 6-year-old son, only my kid yells out to Spongebob not to move.
Hahaha that's hilarious! Props to Andrew for being open about it...my man has all these little "embarrassing" hobbies and interests, but will he ever admit it? NO. Just the other day, he tried on a pair of my stiletto heels and challenged me to a foot race...but you can bet that the guys at the office didn't hear about that one. =)
That's hilarious...we are HUGE Spongebob fans, too. I'll admit it. I do a pretty spot on Patrick imitation. ;)
Spongebob is great! I have a friend who doesn't let her kids watch it. She thinks Spongebob and Patrick are mean to each other. Spongebob is on every day in my house.
Ooooh...that's the episode where he goes to glove world! And all the things spit when they talk. That one's scary!
We love Spongebob, too, but Back to the Barnyard is our fave!
And here I thought I was the only one whose husband grows emotionally invested in children's shows. In our house, however, the husband constantly roots for Rintoo (the whiny one from Ni Hao, Kai-Lan).
Was that your husband or your kid talking. If It was your kid, Awe so cute. If it was your man, he really does need to lay off the cartoons for awhile.
Not only is that the funniest thing I've heard today, but it gives me a safe place to admit that... for years I've been pulling for Tom to get Jerry; for Wil E. Coyote to get the road runner; and for Sylvester to get Tweety... just once! Should I see someone about this?
Interesting.....we're fans too although last night we watched an episode of Mr. Bean [yes I know everyone hates him out here]
He makes many valiant efforts to catch a train. Eventually he manages it but it's the wrong train, destined for Moscow.
Now I shall never be able to persuade anyone to take public transport again.
Cheers
Love that!!
Well now, you never do really say, there, whether or not you were rooting for him, do you?
Any confessions?
He's a softie, your man.
ok-that's funny! I personally like the episode where Spongebob sings at the sports arena and makes squidward(sp?) look good. Kelly
iamsasyk
We love Spongebob. My favorite is "Ripped Pants." My kids don't even know all the words, but I do!
And I always root for him when he takes his boating test!
You had me at "I love SpongeBob."
;)
I am a huge lover of Spongebob myself. I have to say that Patrick is my favorite and became even cooler when I found out who does his voice- its the guy who played Dobber the goofy assistant on the show Coach.
My favorite episodes are the ones with goofy songs like the campfire song (and yes, I just sang that as I typed it) and the F-U-N song.
Please tell Andrew that he is not alone in his cheering for the underdog. :o)
Well, a guy's gotta root for something! :) Cute!
He he he! Funny guy you have there...
I'm like this with VeggieTales. I know Larry and Bob don't really exist - but I feel a deep emotional connection to them anyway. Really.
We love Spongebob in our house, but have recently switched over to Phineas and Ferb. Talk about hilarious! You can catch some episodes on YouTube if you don't get it on cable (or whatever). It is on Disney channel.
Funny dialogue! W.W. only gets to watch Spongebob over at the daycare lady's house but that certainly doesn't stop him from talking about it. ;)
Okay this may be one of my favorite one of your posts yet!
