A Scorpion Cake: It'll Rock You Like a Hurricane

Scorpion CakeAnd all for the love of a ten year-old boy.

David said he wanted a Scorpion cake for his birthday. Spencer said, "What? A cake with frizzy 80's hair and a German accent?"

No, not that kind of Scorpion, silly.

It was requested that I make it brown because the brown ones are deadlier. I love both of my boys for such unique reasons.

I dare you to guess how I made that tail. Go ahead and guess.

When I pulled up this picture, the tail was the first thing I wondered about!

That is a pretty adorable scorpion. I'd totally eat a piece of it.

Peruby said...

My first thoughts were a gourd of sorts. Is it 100% edible?

Sage said...

It must have some support in there to keep the tail up so I am guessing that you have used something like skewers or cocktail sticks in pieces of cake.

Great cake though..

Jennifer said...

Hmmm... I like a good dare. but in order to answer the question about the tale, I'll need to know if you are a fan of Ace of Cakes.

Kelli said...

I'm guessing Rice Krispie Treats...

Anonymous said...

My guess is that you used rice crispy treats to make the tail! Fantastic job!

Joanna said...

Did you ice a banana? :-P The Rice Krispies idea sounds more appetizing!

a Tonggu Momma said...

You know... Ace of Cakes is only a quick jaunt down the road from our house. In order to narrow down the possibilities - is the cake 100% edible?

Mrs_Scotsman said...

Marshmellows on strung on a hanger?

Are you giving a prize for the person who guesses correctly?

Robin said...

Fondant?

I like the rice krispies idea though.

Whatever it is, the cake looks awesome!

Anonymous said...

I have no idea how you did that. The coolest cake I made was a cow and I used tooth picks to hold the ears to the body but it was flat not standing upright.

Annette Lyon said...

I assume you'll tell us?

Rice crispies is a cake secret, so either that (like others have said) or paper mache. Maybe? Way cool cake.

Amateur Steph said...

I'm goign for the squash theory on the tail. It looks fabulous!

Anonymous said...

I'm thinking you used a mold for an Easter bunny and carefully cut out the claws. Then you stacked ice cream cones for the tail and frosted them.

Kristen M. said...

This is why I love reading your blog. Great job with the cake. My guess for the tail is aluminum foil covered in frosting.

Marla Taviano said...

That is awesome. It kind of looks like you formed it out of poop though.

ConnieG said...

I love it, very original, Ace of Cakes will be knocking on your door.

Bet it made his day

threesidesofcrazy said...

How cute - you a fun mom. A spaghetti Squash or a banana?

Laura said...

Your cake is very cool, although I can't figure for the life of me what it's covered with. :) As for the tail, I'm thinking rice krispies, ice cream cones, and/or maybe modeling chocolate?

Becky Frame said...

That is the awesomest cake I have ever seen.

Tim Appleton (Applehead) said...

I would not put paper mache past you.

Suzie B. said...

Very cool! I say the tail might be aluminum foil, but how it would be anchored would be another guess..

Montserrat said...

I'm guessing rice krispie treats too. Very cool.

I have some nephews that would love a cake like this. They go scorpion hunting with their dad several evenings a week. They take a blacklight out in the night and look for the "glow-in-the-dark" creatures.

Twinsmom said...

I'm thinking a coat hanger or wire left over from your remodel with Rice Krispie treats. You have to have something sturdy in there for that top curve, and I can't think of anything edible that would hold a curve like that by itself. I would definitely nominate you for a cake challenge on Food Network!

Pencil Writer said...

My first thought was--coat hangar wire covered in play-doh (or however you spell that stuff!) Good job, Mom! However you did it!

Jill in MA said...

Rice crispy treats is too easy an answer. That's how most people (i.e. me) would do it. So it must be something else. But I just can't imagine what.

Melissa said...

I was going to guess styrofoam for the tail. Very cool cake! Aren't boys *special*!?!

CountessLaurie said...

All I could think of was rice krispie treats, but would that hold up or fall over... hmmm... I give up! Great job. It looks totally gross and deadly :-)

Jolene said...

I am guessing rice krispie treats - I hope you are going to tell us! Or show us.

Anonymous said...

I'd say MAGIC. Everyone knows you can cook up anything. You're a magician Michelle. :-)

I totally don't know how you made that absolute wonder!

Heffalump said...

Rice Crispy treats?
That is what I have used in the past when I need a cake to keep it's shape.

Chris said...

That's a cool cake...reminds me of my childhood... my Mom always attempted to fulfill our individual requests for our cakes. One year my youngest brother asked for Baked Alaska, and she DID it!!!!!!!!!
The tail I will leave to all of these other obviously seasoned bakers!

jean said...

Get out! How do you think of these things? I would have made a sheet cake and called it a day. Great job.

Anonymous said...

That scorpion is awesome! Did you have a hard time getting the frosting to stick?

Libby's Library said...

Please, please, please tell us how you did it!!!!!!

Patois42 said...

Must not show this to youngest son. Else you will have all-expense paid trip to San Francisco in April to make one for his birthday.

Caffienated Cowgirl said...

So cool...is the tail a cookie? Can't show this to my son because he'll decide he wants it instead of cupcakes for his birthday :)

Jenna said...

I'm guessing Rice Krispie treats. Whatever it is, you did a fantastic job!

Unknown said...

Awesome cake!
I have the task of making a Spiderman cake for my son's birthday in March. That should be interesting. I may know how to cook and bake but I'm not an artist. Can Spiderman be a stick figure?

Scribbit said...

Okay okay I'll spill the beans. I figure I ought to fess up before Jenn at Family Musings rats me out :)

I initially made the tail with a giant Rice Krispie treat but I left it sitting to harden and it shifted and didn't harden in the right direct.

So . . . I went to zap it in the microwave to soften it up a bit when I got distracted and zapped too long so that it was WAY too soft.

By then I was under time pressure so I decided to bag the whole thing and grab some aluminum foil. So there it is, the tail is *officially* aluminum foil. The rest is real but chewing on the tail would be bad.

Do you still love me now that my secret is out? :)

Michelle said...

That cake is just perfect for a boy of 10.Happy Birthday to you...as for the tail foil wrapped and iced?

Michelle said...

I never saw your reply Michelle ..HA I was right :) Yeah For ME!

Tina said...

That is the coolest cake I have EVER seen - bravo!

Chrissy Johnson said...

Michelle, when it comes to Scorpion(s) cakes..."There's No One Like You".

Melissa said...

I love you even more now that the secret is out!

Michelle Glauser said...

Looks great, aluminum foil or not.

Kathryn said...

I would use aluminium foil and then frost it so thats how I think you made it too. Please tell us your secret. :-)

jan in nagasaki said...

well, in that you are alaskan and all, I would have to guess that you gathered up some old moose antlers laying around in the yard from that moose that ate up your new imported jasmine bush....and stuck that in the scorpions back-side.

yea, that's it, moose antlers...

luke said...

Ahhh Scorpion. As a child I often confused Klaus Meine the lead singer of Scorpion with Richard Simmons. There are not too many white guys with blond fros and I think that is what threw me.

Damselfly said...

Looks ... delicious?

I was totally going to say it was a Rice Krispies treat! My second guess was some chicken wire and Bondo.

Margie said...

My thoughts exactly when I saw the picture "how did she make that tail", then can you eat it?! Let's see what could be in there? Fondant, playdough (it is edible), a long licorice stick, mmmmmmm I give up....

Superdumb Supervillain said...

You are officially the best mom, ever!

AKkimmie said...

rice crispy treats:)I lover making cakes...so fun!!!!!!

John and Laura said...

aluminum foil, rice krispies or sugar cookies.

Looks awesome!

Chris said...

So...as with a scorpian...ya stay away from the tail!

Jennifer said...

No idea... I can't make a regular round shaped cake.. much less animal shaped!! You are so talented!!

Jennifer said...

Foil... genius.. actually my type of thinking... nothing edible is really needed right? ;)

noreen said...

what we do for our kids, last summer a week before her bday my daughter requested an icecream butterfly cake for her party, here is the post if you want to what I came up with
http://sillymommy2sillygirls.blogspot.com/2008/08/butterfly-ice-cream-cake.html
no idea about the tail

daysease said...

okay, living with more than my fair share of scorpions, they kind of freak me out, but I will be among those who think "that is the coolest scorpion cake I have EVER seen, and you are SUCH a cool mom!" Even my son, who passed by as i pulled up the picture, thought it was GREAT, and he is 8! you got some of the neatest responses. Great bunch of readers, here. :-) and, I would not have guessed Rice Krispies, I never knew it was a big thing to use in baking. hmmmm... But my guess was WAY off. I would have said Twizzlers tied together and one hanging a big further out to make almost a point. Yup, bad guess, but it was different. And, I would have totally done the SAME thing with the foil instead. actually, where in the world did you get the idea from. it is SPECTACULAR and i think i could TOTALLY use it somewhere down the road. I can NEVER get my icing/frosting right. did you make it from scratch? Any suggestions on how to make it correctly? Anyhow, Great Job, MOM!!! Love your blog. So many different things to see, so much to peek the interest. :-)

Jennifer said...

I wouldn't have ratted you out. :)

Pamela said...

That is a serious cake.

Anonymous said...

One of the most awesome blog post titles I have ever read. Actually, THE most awesome. :)

Heather of the EO said...

Tin foil is much better than what I was going to guess. I was going to say caulk. But I wasn't serious.

Patricia L said...

Thank you for commenting on my blog. Hope your son had a happy b'day...mine got an ear infection which meant a not-so-happy b'day. (At least he's small enough we can just "pretend" his b'day is on a day when he's feeling 100%)

Kelley said...

Is the tail from Rice Crispy's?? Very cute cake...if you know...a scorpion can be cute....

Jena Webber said...

O.K. the TAIL is most definitely almond paste, I think. Or it's a banana. A nice, firm banana. Very cool and so yummy.

Thanks for the comment on my blog. The proof is not yet in the puddin' as to whether or not I have been successful with homeschooling. Time will tell.

Emily ~ Little Window Shoppe said...

That is incredible!!! OK, I'm thinking it could be a banana too, I'm so impressed! Has someone stumbled this post yet? I'm going to right now...way to go.

Marsanne Petty said...

I guess a banana - that seems solid enough to hold up. Or maybe one of those styrofoam cones that you can get from the hobby shops, carved into shape? At any rate, you did an awesome job!

Farmer*swife a/k/a Glass_Half_Full said...

I've been following here for awhile. The cake thing caught my attention. Though, I have several ideas of my own how I'd do this myself (I pride myself in making my children's and friend's children's fantasy cakes), but the rice krispie thing was a new idea to me.

it's quite heartening that you went to the foil at a last minute save! And, quite the smooth frosting job!

Way to go, Mrs. Scribbit! Ah, the memories when your boys are grown with kids of their own and sharing the "magic" of their Mom!

SarahHub said...

The brown ones are deadlier! Ha! Out of the mouths of boys...

Anonymous said...

Would love to know how you made this, it would be perfect for my scouts, our troop is dong an egyptian theme for blue and gold and a scorpion cake was one of the things they mentioned that they wanted to do.

Petit Elefant said...

I cannot BELIEVE you made that yourself. Good grief, how do you even cut the thing to eat it?

Anonymous said...

Awesome job on the cake!

Janet said...

Without looking at the other guesses, I'm thinking wire coat hanger.

ames said...

marshmallows!

jubilee said...

I don't have a unique guess; others have already said my guess. Whatever the technique it's cool.

Stephanie said...

Scary! That cake is just what a little boy would love on his birthday! You're one cool mom.
