Don't Try to Tell Him Anything

Bill Gates"Mom," said David in between bites at the dinner table, "Do you know who Bill Gates is?"

"Um, yes, David I believe I do." I said before passing the salad to my right. "Do YOU know who Bill Gates is?"

He gave me this roll of the eyes as if he'd been talking to the man earlier that day, discussing possible mergers and acquisitions over a fierce game of Stratego.

"Yea I know who Bill Gates is," he said in this disgusted 10 year-old voice. "He invented Windex and microscopes."

"What?" I said, choking on my spaghetti.

"Windex. You know. Windex??" he paused while I blinked. "Microscopes??"

"Hold on there, I think you mean 'Windows' and 'Microsoft'?" I said, holding down the laughter.

"Nope. Windex. Bill Gates invented Windex. Stas said so."

Stas is David's best friend who is an expert on the subject of Mr. Gates. And glass cleaners.

Apparently windows were around LONG before Mr. Gates' time--any fool knows that.

***

And while you're pondering the mysteries of the male mind (which apparently knows everything) listen to this:

I never get tired of this song.

Don't try to find a connection between Windex, microscopes and this ballad, there is none, I just like it and have been listening to it this week. I don't even think there's a connection to Microsoft, though it's possible they're involved somehow. They're everywhere.

The song you've been listening to is from the movie "Once". It's a romantic movie, with a bit of a twist, but I won't give it away - you can find spoilers on the Web.

windex and microscopes, eh? I guess some people just have the Midas touch! You'll have to remind him of this when he's older!

When that movie first came out, I ran to purchase the CD. And I listened to that song over and over and over.

As for Bill Gates, of course he invented Windex. Everyone knows that. And the Greeks know that Windex is great for acne, especially on your wedding day.

Why is it that kids will believe someone their own age over someone who has lived much longer, been through college and given birth to them? I remember having many similar discussions with my sister when she was little. She always assumed that anyone in our family was a moron and not to be trusted.

Windex and microscopes I can cope with but the ad for horoscopes on the video clip did not go down too well with me!

I love that song too -- really beautiful. Your son obviously has the analytical mind of an engineer. Not easily understood -- I know I married one and have a couple of sons just like their father! ;o)

Windex and microscopes, huh? I wonder if you're planning to sharing that info with Mr. Gates. You know, just so he'll know. Kids are wonderful--even when misinformed. Cute. Very cute.

Well (as a Mac person myself) I would say that Windex and microscopes are his 2 best inventions!

How funny! The best part is, kids don't even try to be funny/cute/amusing when they come up with stuff like that!

Gilit Frank-
I've heard it's good, I know the song won Best Original Song a year or two ago at the Academy Awards. I think Glen Hasard's voice is a dead ringer for Cat Stevens.

Love the movie action there Tonggu--you are a A+ quoter :) And M, I'm am SO with you but you said it funnier!

Maybe Microsoft invented YouTube. Or at least laid the groundwork for it.

I loved Once. And as for the song, it's one of my favorite love songs of all time.

LOL! That reminds me of last week when my daughter waltzed into the room with a blanket for a cape and announced: "Abra Dabra! I'm a addition!"

Ah, the movie is great, the song and soundtrack - even better. Check out "The Hill" by Marketa Irglova, now this is a tear-jerker.

If you like Glen Hansard, look into The Swell Season, w/ Irglova and his band The Frames.

The way Windows crashes, I think he's better off having invented Windex.

micro-what?
Reminds of men in Black: the service is funded through patents on velcro and the microwave oven. No windex, though. Sorry.

Normally when I think something is funny, then read it to my husband - he gives me the eye roll. This time he let out the tiniest bit of a chuckle. I think we found a winner!

I let out a BIG hearty laugh.

Bill Gates inventing Windex and Microscopes is nothing short of awesome! We are all Mac snobs at my house, and I am so forwarding this to my husband and my oldest son!

(Can't listen to the song yet because it's 5:30 am and everyone else is still asleep.)

RFLOL! I love it. Just the other day we were driving in the car and my youngest son asked, "Mom, how much of Microsoft does Bill Gates own?" I said I didn't know, and then I tried to remember if there had ever been a day when I was SEVEN that I wondered about stock options! ;)

This entry, and song choice made my DAY! (ha ha ha ha ha!)

Thank you!

I LOVE that song too! I rented the movie and rewound the scene of the song several times. What is the title of it? I would buy the soundtrack for this one song. I'm so glad to stumble across it again on your blog.

Love the story of Windex and microscopes. Very cute.
