Oh artichokes of springtime green
With fuzzy centers yet unseen;
I'll steam you till your leaves relax
And eat for dinner, lunch and snacks.
Dipped in butter leaf by leaf;
All for me (to the relief)
Of my dear mate whose greatest fears
Are vegetables that come in spheres.

OMG! Michelle, that is such a funny poen (LOL) and so well written! Enjoyed it!
Thanks for the early AM chuckle! My husband hates them too and I haven't had one in years because of that...I think that's gonna change!
I have never eaten one. It's mostly that I just forget it's there. But my mother loved those little guys. And she ate them the same way...steamed and about 17 pounds of real melted butter. She could do that easily. She never had a weight problem in her life. I'll have to try them one of these days.
That made me laugh; I'm impressed with your writing talents! Umm, I do have to say that the pair of artichokes? I don't know why, but they somehow made me think of.. how do I put this? Sort of like alien "girls"... a pair of globes, but green and scaly..
Man, I need more sleep!
I've never had much of a thing for poetry -- until now. You've made me a believer. Artichokes are definitely wonderful inspiration for waxing poetic!
Very funny - pretty picture of artichokes, too. Alison Kelley blogged about the most fantastic artichoke and parmesan cheese dip! I made it, and it's delish.
LOL! I used to be able to indulge in these tranquilly, but then my girls caught on to the artichoke goodness I was hording to myself and now I have to share.
I ate my first one while in Ohio! My friend Lucretia aka GeekMommy, introduced me to one and showed me how to eat it. It was very good!!
:)
Hmm I hope there are some artichokes in our veg box today.....Gilroy is just a hop skip and a jump away from us which in case you didn't already know = the artichoke capital of the world.....so they claim.
Cheers
You have near inspired me to try an artichoke myself... is it horrible that never in my entire existence have I eaten a freshly prepared artichoke? I really love vegetables... even the unusual ones - eggplant, cabbage, asparagus, turnips, parsnips... all favorites. But never tried an artichoke. I sense the time is near at hand...
Wah haaaaa hhha!!! How nice :)
Now do Portobellos....
I've never eaten a fresh artichoke...one more item to be added to my "do before I die" list!
That's wonderful! My favorite type of poetry! ;)
Oh yum. I love your poem. I love artichoke even more. I've only steamed my own once. It's time to do it again and introduce the kids to the wonder which is the artichoke.
Yum! I love artichokes! Great poem.
Bravo!! Encore, encore!
I love your poem! I love artichokes too and now I want to go to the store and get some!
Ahahahaha! Brilliant!
Oh tis a delight, indeed, to hear
of others with such a very odd fear.
ha ha ha haa h!
LOL!
We must be on the same wavelength or something. I posted an ode I wrote to coffee. LOL!
I have to admit that your ode was much better.
Love it, love it!
Not artichokes, you know, the poetry. I'm afraid I share your husband's spherical concerns.
LOL!
But sadly, this vegetable sublime/
Is not easily found here, will have to find time/ To search in supermakets and in shops to poke/
About to find a spherical artichoke.
Oh, I LOVE artichokes and I'm so glad I'm the only one in the house who eats them! I buy the jarred ones at Trader Joes...omg I'm gonna go finish off the jar in the fridge right now...
Lovely. I *heart* artichokes, too! In fact, I'm steaming them to go with grilled Alaska salmon for dinner tomorrow nite!
I adore artichokes, especially with garlic butter. Do you know the Pablo Neruda "Ode to the Artichoke"? Apparently, you aren't the only one who has been inspired. :) You're in excellent company.
Unfortunately, we both love artichoke leaves dipped in melted butter. So I have to share. Great poem!!!
Yummy. Very cute poem, and I hope you enjoyed your artichokes! We love them around here. Well, Ted and I do. Maya not so much. Do you squeeze a little lemon into the butter? That's the best way to go, from a native Californian's point of view.
(Do you like how I claimed Boston, West Virginia, and Alaska in my last comment, and now I'm claiming CA? Fickle.)
Great poem! So creative and fun.
Reminds me of Kilmer's "I think that I shall never see/A poem as lovely as a tree . . ."
I've had an artichoke dip, but that's as far as my leafy, spherical experiences go.
