Andrew had the day off and we were wandering around Costco (yea, I know--it's a dangerous place to take him) and do you know what they had?? An old-fashioned arcade game, the real stand-up kind with 100 games on it. Everything from new stuff to the Atari classics like Asteroids, Frogger, Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede . . .
Andrew began to brag about how he was "so good" at Centipede and set out to prove his manliness with a quick game. Quick indeed, he was dead within a minute. I asked for a try and it was like the first time Michaelangelo held a brush or the first time Einstein looked at the stars, or--well, you get the idea. I was terrific and I was hooked, he was hollering at me from the produce section to finish up already.
You know I'm cool now that I hold the high score in Centipede at Costco.

By the way, congrats for managing to keep the coat and scarf on while playing an intense video game. I always have to shed the outer layers and roll my sleeves up due to all the concentration.

nothing like old school arcade games. We bought the kids an Atari console that plugs into the tv - The best $30 we ever spent..:)

I have to agree Costco is a dangerous place to take your husband. It's actually dangerous for me too... somehow I can't leave the place without dropping atleast $150-$200 bucks!
I was a Grand Master at Ms. Pac Man myself. Ah, the memories. Ah, the carpal tunnel.
My brother (the one who owns a company that writes games for Nintendo, X-box, etc.) has a whole collection of the old arcade games lining the walls at his company headquarters. The brilliant thing is that they still require quarters to play. Did the one at Costco take quarters? You could earn all your kids' allowance back from them.

I've never played centipede but I still play Donkey Kong and Mario Brothers on my SNES.
I love those games, too. I remember feeling so left out when I was little because I think I was the only kid on the block to NOT have Atari. I got my son the new Atari with the 20 games in it for $17 at Target. I hope he likes it as much as I wanted it!
I have a special place in my heart for those 'old-fashioned' arcade games - they supported my family while I was growing up. My dad and his business partner had them in restaurants, hospitals, civic centers and other places all over where we lived. We used to get our allowances, tooth fairy money - everything was in quarters... :)
Oh yes, Centipede is one of my favorites of all time too - along with Galaga, PacMan and Donkey Kong Jr.!

I sure do miss Centipede. It was the only one in which I kind of rocked.

There are a couple of old arcade games at the laundromat. (Pac-Man and...something else.) My kids don't know, yet, that you put money in them to play, so we just look at them.

I love me my Ms. Pac-Man. Or I did 20, er, 25 years ago. Yikes. I doubt if I could get through the first level now.
Ms. Pac-man was my favorite. The first time I played, a group of older teen guys graciously allowed me to take a turn knowing that I'd only be a second. 11 minutes later I took a brief look around and they were all standing around looking very bored and very aggravated. Good times! And yes, I too am interested in knowing if you bought it.:)
