What Is That?

Whale VertebraeAndrew came home with a very large, very heavy package and lots of excitement.

"What's in the box?"

"Someone sent this to me from Barrow--look!"

"Hmmm . . . a whale bone. So what are you going to do with it?"

"I'll keep it here."

"Really? Where did you plan on putting it?"

"Oh I don't know . . . maybe on the mantel."

"Right. [pause] How about your office? Wouldn't that be a great piece for your office, something that just screams Alaska executive?"

"Well I'm going to bleach it first."

"Bleach it? With what?"

"Bleach. To make it white."

"Yes, I'm aware of what bleach does, I'm just picturing you with a bottle of Clorox and a whale bone the size of a Mini Cooper."

"I'll let you know how it goes."

Michelle, THAT has got to be one of the most interesting WW in the group today! You captured a fantastic photo of it.

(and I don't blame you on the bleach concern...that could be an accident waiting to happen!!)

:)

Hahahha....so I am not the only wife that suggests that her husband put some of his more interesting finds in his office!

OOO I really like it. Don't bury it in the office - it's too interesting and pretty!

Tee hee...Did you ever read Emily's Runaway Imagination by Beverly Cleary? In it Emily bleaches her horse, because her city cousin is coming to visit and expecting to see a dazzeling white steed not a dingy white farm horse. Bleaching the whale bone totally reminded me of that.

Ah...ha....

and I thought electric guitars on a mantlepiece was bad...

I blogged about you at my New York Renovator blog. Ever hear of dermestid beetle-therapy?

I'm with you and Jacki...I've managed to convinve Tony that for the sake of matrimonial harmony, he take most of his mounts to his office. However, I lost the battle with Bruiser the bear and he's hanging in my family room. You should have seen the look on the Joy School girls' faces when they came downstairs for the first time!!

Keep us posted on the bad bleach idea...:-)

Nature is so much better than art! Very cool.

I have to say that I'm proud of myself for knowing that was a whale bone before I read the post...

I can't wait to see picture of it after it was bleached...and the area of the house he chose to bleach it in...

that is so cool! I am green with envy. (I would probably put it in a shadow box on the wall though).

Has he done some bone-bleaching research first? Sounds tricky.

I figured that's what it was. Great pic.

Now that is a challenge.

And you let us know how it goes.

Let the man be a man! He can learn on his own, bleach isn't that inherently dangerous....argh, argh, argh

Oh, definitely an office piece. Nothing says "I'm an Alaskan man's man" like your own large, hand-bleached chunk of whale vertebrae.

Actually, it looks a bit like some primitive japanime ghost.

Oh, how I remember those days...one of my brothers was always dragging bones home from the beach and asking my mom if we could "please mount it" and hang it on the wall. How funny.

Can't wait to see it bleached. *lol* Men, definitely from Mars. :)

We have a large vertebra from a whale too that we found on the beach during our honeymoon - so of course, I had to keep it! It has been in our garden ever since and now is worn, white, and well used by the squirrels for sharpening their teeth!(yes, really, I've watched them!)

Maybe he could turn it into a lamp? Thank heaven for offices, dens, basements, and garages to hold all the male decorations of the world.

I've heard of bleaching deer bones and squirrel skulls, but a whale? where would you find a pot big enough to hold it? :)

You are a true Alaskan. I wouldn't have known that was a whale bone.

Yes and wouldn't you be interested to know that I can tell the difference between moose poop and bear poop. Or summer moose poop and winter moose poop. Or scat or whatever.

Yes I'm one classy dame.
