Fresh Strawberry Ice Cream

Strawberry Ice CreamI have a Cuisinart ice cream maker which I like fine I guess, the only problem is that I have to freeze the drum for a couple days before it's ready for churning ice cream. If I don't get it cold enough (and our freezer isn't the most reliable but hey, it's Alaska right? A faulty freezer isn't that high on the priority list) then the ice cream won't freeze completely but will get 70% there then part way through the process the whole thing, drum, ice cream and all will begin to melt. Drives me crazy!

So if you're in the market for an ice cream maker, I don't know that I'd recommend this one, but regardless I'd definitely recommend this recipe. I've got strawberries coming out the ears here and I've been making strawberry jam, strawberry pie and now strawberry ice cream. It's just so good.

3 cups pureed strawberries
2 pasteurized eggs
1 1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup of heavy cream
2 cups of half and half (that's half cream, half milk and I use the fat free kinds they now produce)
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Clean and stem the berries then pulse them in a food processor until they're the right consistency (large chunks tend to freeze solid and you don't want that). Set them aside.

Beat the eggs with a mixer for a couple minutes until they're lemon colored and frothy (what a word--"frothy"!) Then add the sugar, cream, half and half and vanilla and mix well to combine. Stir in the berries and process it in an ice cream maker--it made require doing it in two batches if your appliance is small.

Once it's frozen, transfer the ice cream to a plastic container and let it "ripen" or set a bit to freeze more and let the flavors mix well. But after a couple hours dig in and enjoy.

Good to know that the fat free versions of half & half work! Now all I need is an ice cream maker...

Sounds like my ice-cream maker. Why can't they make one that when you are actually finished mixing it - it is at the stage of "ready to eat".

I've had more success using mine to make "slushes"...like frozen homemade lemonade slushes - we love them. Just make your favorite freshly squeezed lemonade (I sometimes put it all in the freezer to get super cold and a bit icy before transferring it to the ice-cream maker).

Um.... Strawberry ice cream. My mom used to make this when I was young. And peach ice cream... I'll have to dust off my ice cream maker in the basement so Evie can have these wonderful memories, too!

I have the same problem with my ice cream maker. Ruined a whole batch of double chocolate chip ice cream last week because of it....

I would be careful with the raw eggs! any icecream i have made that called for eggs i had to cook on the stove first. I just don't think I could stomach it, plus for sefety reasons....

I bought my husband an ice cream maker because he loves ice cream and so does my son. Then my son got sick, and dairy (lactose) intolerance is one strong possibility. The ice cream maker sits, lonely, in the basement...

Making homemade ice cream was such a memorable part of my childhood--and though today's machines are so much easier to operate, I miss the sight and sounds of a vintage hand-cranked maker. Your picture is delicious and I'm finding myself craving strawberry ice cream now, lol.

I think I might have to hurt you for that!!!

I love ice cream so much that for christmas one year my hubby bought me an ice cream maker. Same brand as yours I think, but truthfully, we used it maybe 2-3 times. It's the freezing of the drum ahead of time and the price of all the ingredients that stop us. Then we moved here and it just never got unpacked. I might have to give it another try though.

oh, yum.

funny, i actually have a strawberry ice cream story from yesterday myself. i went to busch gardens, my very favorite place in the world, and i love to hit up my favorite eateries when i'm there because i don't go often. so i ate my reuben at my favorite restaurant, and then i went to get my low-fat strawberry frozen yogurt (hard serve) and fresh strawberries on a waffle cone. lowfat and deeeelish!!

and apparently it had been so long that i've been there that i didn't know that the place stopped serving it. and i was broken. (i ended up with vanilla ice cream and that crappy strawberry sauce with non-fresh strawberry chunks. yuck.) but this post looks just like my cone would have looked had they still served my favorite. so thanks!

There's no comparison between homemade strawberry ice cream and store-bought. You know what else is great homemade? Banana ice cream!

This recipe sounds yummy!! I can't wait to try it - just bought strawberries today.

I have the same ice cream maker and just store my drum in the freezer after I wash it each time so it's ready to go.

Ok, I'm going to ask the silly question. Where do you find pasteurized eggs? They're not all pasteurized, are they? Or are you talking about Egg Beaters?

We made two batches of ice cream yesterday - for my 3 year old daughter who doesn't like chocolate, this strawberry ice cream that you posted, and for the rest of us, chocolate-hazelnut-raspberry ice cream from a chocolate cookbook. Your strawberry ice cream was great! It set much easier than the other one (as in: it did set in the ice cream maker, after half an hour). After it set, we did leave the ice cream outside to get it nicely frozen. Good thing it's winter now. And it was a hit with both the kids and the adults. Which reminds me, I should go grab a bit right now for a dessert :) Thanks!
