Oh My Goodness I'm in Love

Oh wow oh wow oh wow! I got a flyer in the mail advertising a boutique here in town that sells Oleana sweaters. I'd never heard of them before but the gorgeous photos on the card sent me hunting the web for more information.

And I have good news and bad news. First the good news: you can readily find places that sell these beautiful clothes.

And the bad news?  They come from the little town of Bergen, Norway where they are produced and sold for what can only be an excrutiatingly high price.  How high? Well I'm not sure except that it was reported that during Ms. Obama's last trip to the area she picked up several . . . you know? When her husband was tied up in Oslo with some little presentation or other?

In fact I have yet to find an actual price on any site I saw and that can only be a very, very bad indicator--kind of like a restaurant so fancy it doesn't print the prices on the menu? And under the theory that if you have to ask how much it costs you can't afford it, I'm guessing that I can't afford one but I can always hope, right?

Makes me wish I could knit better.

But as for things I can afford, I've been loving some finger-linkin' good country lately.  Lucinda Williams' "Can't Let Go" and The Black Keys' "Howlin' for You" are mighty fine tunes. And actually, I've even been caught listening to Taylor Swift's latest album (that's the effects of having a teenage daughter around the house and totally not my fault).  Check them out if you fancy some down home tunes

Reminds me of a dinner I had in Chicago once. The thing about those restaurants is that I'm usually suffering from (sticker shock) indigestion before we even leave so what, really, is the point?

Sounds like you might have to visit the boutique :)

The wristlet in the Fall 2010 catalog lists for $61.00...

I do believe they run several hundred dollars. However, my mother has one from over 40 years ago and while it has been worn quite frequently, it is in excellent condition. If they are still made that well and you find one you love, the price is worth it in the end. QUALITY that you don't see many other places, for sure!

Gasp. $400 for a sweater--apparently I have good taste.

Norwegian sweaters are generally quite expensive here in the states, but I have found that they are reasonably priced in Norway. I have a Dale sweater that retails for $400 here, but I bought it for just under $100 when I was in Bergen. I'm guessing that is why Mrs. Obama picked up a few of these sweaters.

Funny! That link is for a shop in my town (Rochester, MN). These sweaters are quite popular in Minnesota.

To provide a little more perspective on the price, $100 USD is (ballpark) 500ish Norwegian kroner. A good quality sweater here can easily go for 1000-1500 NKR and a really good quality item (as this seems to be) could be 2000+ NKR. I also want to mention (and this is in no way a criticism) that Bergen is Norway's second largest "little town"! Not saying much in a country of only 5 million people, I know, but still ;)

Dear Michelle,

I was just reading your blog about Oleana sweaters and looking at the attached pic. Exquisite. We live in rural Nebraska and, even though we have very cold weather, I have not seen such a beautiful sweater worn locally. I am now combing the web for the best price on something like that. (: BTW, the woman in the picture has a gorgeous flowered hat. I am part owner of a website that features childrens' hats of a similar style. We offer kids' hats that are sure to be remarked upon, which is why they make a great gift. If you are ever interested in doing a give-away promo, please let us know. Here is our link:

BTW, I totally agree about 'The Eagle'! I love being entertained while learning about history. It's like eating Brussel Sprouts dipped in chocolate. OK, maybe not. But you get my meaning. (:

Best, Josie

I've seen these sweaters at a place in New England somewhere - and yes, they weren't cheap!
